Evidence of high-impact publications and awareness of the potential impact of the publications beyond academia is expected. The successful candidate is expected to: teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels on accredited nursing programmes, supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research, undertake administrative tasks associated with an academic position and undertake excellent research.Faculty of Education & Health SciencesSchool of Nursing & MidwiferyContract Type: 5 Fixed Term ContractIf PhD completed or near completion, contract will become permanent. The school will give the successful applicant a 5-year period to complete their PhD and on completion the contract will become permanent. If not completed the contract will terminate.Registration on the Psychiatric Division of the Register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) or, for overseas candidates, the ability to register with the NMBI on the psychiatric division of the register.OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB:Research, Scholarship and InnovationThe School of Nursing and Midwifery seeks candidates who can show evidence of quality research outputs with impact, both within and beyond academia. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in their discipline with the potential to grow as a future research leader. Impact or prospective impact in one's research, aligned with international standards in Nursing and Midwifery is essential.Evidence of excellence in research and scholarship is expected commensurate with their career stage. This includes but is not limited to the following:Applicants should have an excellent track record of research outputs in their discipline, as appropriate to their career stage.Evidence of publication in leading peer-reviewed international journals, presentations at international conferences, and publication of peer-reviewed book chapters, books and/or monographs as appropriate to disciplinary norms.Evidence of a coherent strategy for future research dissemination.Experience or collaborations with international networks in the discipline domain are highly desirable. We especially encourage applicants with drive and ambition in applying for external research funding and creating impact through research. The preparation and submission of applications for extramural research funding will be expected as part of the Assistant Professor role.Teaching, Learning and AssessmentThe University of Limerick encourages scholarship and research in teaching and learning, to help ensure that effective teaching is valued, supported, and developed and to encourage innovation in teaching and learning activities. Enhancing the learning and development experience for both academics and students is a vital consideration for the University and supported by the Centre for Transformative Learning.Experience in teaching is a strength, but not a requirement, for new Assistant Professors. University of Limerick offers pedagogical training to support faculty for a career in academia. In the first years of the role, the appointee should undertake University of Limerick's Post-Graduate Certificate in Learning, Teaching & Assessment in Higher Education. This is not necessary if the applicant has already fully completed a similar qualification at another university. The appointee will be assigned relevant teaching modules by the Head of the Department/School. While full responsibility for a module is not required at entry, it is advantageous. Additionally, teaching-related experience is desirable. Such teaching experience related to the delivery of effective teaching, learning, and assessment would include:Contributions to the delivery of modules (e.g. student assessment, delivery of guest lectures).Engagement in curriculum design and innovation.Participation in continuous professional development in university teaching and learning.Engagement with student learning, including the supervision of students (e.g. undergraduates and masters' students).Essential Criteria:A PhD (level 10NFQ) in nursing or a related area.OR nearing completion of a PhD in nursing or in a related area.OR successful candidate who does not hold a PhD at the time of appointment will be expected to register for PhD study in the first 12 months of appointment and will be supported by the school to complete their studies within the 5-year period. If not completed the contract will terminate.Registration on the Psychiatric Division of the Register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) or, for overseas candidates, the ability to register with the NMBI on the psychiatric division of the register.An MSc in Nursing or a related area.Relevant professional nursing experience.Knowledge of varied approaches to teaching, assessment and learning including a personal teaching philosophy, reflective practice and the use of feedback.Capacity to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research.Experience of supporting/mentoring/teaching students in higher education or practice settings.Experience of taking responsibility for organising own activities and for the management of allocated resources.Knowledge and understanding of critical, practical and theoretical issues relevant to contemporary nursing.Evidence of research conduct, dissemination, and outreach activities.A dedication to the development of the nursing and midwifery professions.Evidence of ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.Evidence at interview of excellent interpersonal skills and effective presentation skills.A strong record of excellent research outputs demonstrating research leadership potential, as appropriate to the discipline and stage of career.Desirable Criteria:Recognised teaching qualification.Evidence of teaching experience in a Third Level Institution.Experience of curriculum development in an academic setting or in a health service setting.Experience of developing and delivering programmes, ideally at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.Academic administrative experience, in particular the administration of undergraduate modules and programmes, or experience as Course Director.A proven track record of peer-reviewed publications, with evidence of first or senior authorship.Demonstrated success in obtaining grant funding and contribution to funded research projects.Experience of programme development and contribution to the accreditation of courses and quality control processes.Experience of supervision of research students including PhD students to completion.Evidence of recent links with nursing and/or midwifery services, either through clinical practice, service development, or research.Experience of contributing actively to local community, national and international nursing and midwifery networks.Evidence of contribution to policy development in nursing and midwifery practice, service or education.Registration or eligible to register in additional divisions of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by NMBI (e.g. Children's Nurses, Mental Health Nurses, Midwives, Public Health Nurses, Nurse Tutors).
