About the Job
Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) combines software and systems engineering to build and run large-scale, massively distributed, fault-tolerant systems.
SRE ensures that Google Cloud's services—both our internally critical and externally-visible systems—have reliability, uptime appropriate to customer needs, and a fast rate of improvement.
Additionally, SREs keep an ever-watchful eye on our systems capacity and performance.
The role focuses on optimizing existing systems, building infrastructure, and eliminating work through automation.
On the SRE team, you'll manage complex challenges of scale unique to Google Cloud, using your expertise in coding, algorithms, complexity analysis, and large-scale system design.
The culture emphasizes intellectual curiosity, problem solving, openness, and a blame-free environment.
We promote self-direction to work on meaningful projects while providing mentorship and support for learning and growth.
Responsibilities
Improve the entire lifecycle of services from inception and design, through deployment, operation, and refinement.
Provide guidance to team members on managing availability and performance of mission-critical services, building automation to prevent problem recurrence, and creating automated responses for non-exceptional service conditions.
Maintain live services by measuring and monitoring availability, latency, and overall system health; lead sustainable incident response and blameless post-mortems.
Scale systems sustainably through automation and drive changes that improve reliability and velocity.
Manage support services before launch through system design consulting, developing software platforms and frameworks, capacity planning, and launch reviews.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
5 years of experience with programming in one or more programming languages.
3 years of experience designing, analyzing, and troubleshooting distributed systems and working with Unix/Linux system internals and administration (e.g. filesystems, inodes, system calls) or networking (e.g. TCP/IP, routing, network topologies and hardware, SDN).
2 years of experience leading projects.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in computing, distributed systems, storage, or networking.
Expertise in designing, analyzing, and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems.
Ability to debug, optimize code, and automate routine tasks.
Systematic problem-solving approach, coupled with effective verbal and written communication skills.
