Job Description:
Clinical or Counselling Psychologist - Irish Prison Service
A Locum Clinical or Counselling Psychologist is required for the National Violence Reduction Unit (NVRU), Midlands Prison, Portlaoise, Co. Laois. The NVRU has been in operation since [insert year]. It is based in Midlands Prison but functions as a separate National Unit.
The unit is co-led by an Assistant Governor (Operational Lead) and a Senior Psychologist (Clinical Lead). Its purpose is to provide an enhanced, psychologically informed service to individuals in custody experiencing high psychological distress and exhibiting high levels of violence. The inmates on the NVRU present with complex forensic and clinical needs, requiring intensive psychological assessment, support, and intervention.
A key feature of the NVRU is the significant role of the Psychology Service in managing the unit, including environmental, staff training, supervision, and psychological assessment and intervention.
The Grade II Psychologist will support the development and operation of the NVRU, conducting comprehensive assessments, developing Care and Management Plans, delivering evidence-based psychological interventions, and contributing to multidisciplinary team efforts. Responsibilities also include supervising operational staff and fostering a joint operational/psychological approach within the unit.
The Psychologist will be supervised by the Senior Psychologist and will have access to administrative and clinical facilities, including online case tracking and specialist computer programs. There are ample CPD opportunities, and the unit emphasizes Mentalisation Based Therapy (MBT). The role may also include assessment and intervention across other areas of the prison estate.
Essential qualifications and competencies
Candidates must:
1. Be eligible for graduate membership of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) or the British Psychological Society (BPS).
2. Hold a postgraduate professional qualification in Clinical Psychology or Counselling Psychology recognized by PSI. Applicants with qualifications obtained outside Ireland must obtain a statement of equivalence from the Department of Health.
Desirable but not essential:
* Experience with forensic or inpatient populations addressing emotional, mental health, or offence-related difficulties.
