Job Title: Clinical Tutor / Lecturer in Emergency Medicine

Reporting To: Prof Seamus Sreenan, Director of Graduate Entry Medicine, RCSI or nominee

Location: Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown

Contract: 12 months, renewable, full time

Start Date: July 2025

Objective:

The principal objective of the post is to participate in the development, direction, teaching, facilitation and examinations of the undergraduate teaching programme in Emergency Medicine and to promote Connolly Hospital as a centre of excellence for EM education in Ireland.

* Clinical Lecturers and Tutors are eligible to apply for funding for the completion of an MD or PhD with RCSI (some terms and conditions apply)

Contract:

This appointment is available for a period of one year initially, renewable to a maximum of two further years subject to satisfactory performance.

Salary: €55,000 per annum for Clinical Lecturer or €45,000 for Clinical Tutor. Level of appointment will depend on the successful candidates' previous experience.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

* Contributing to the clinical teaching programme in the junior, intermediate and senior cycle of the four and five year teaching programmes
* Contributing to the assessment of students in the junior, intermediate and senior cycles of the four and five year programmes. This includes development, delivery and evaluation of these activities
* Liaising with heads of department, project leaders for clinical competence and other relevant faculty members in planning, delivering and evaluating teaching programmes
* Providing resources and communication with student groups via the RCSI virtual learning environment
* Delivering the curriculum at a number of sites e.g. assigned hospitals, RCSI Campus St Stephens Green, RCSI Sandyford Institute of Leadership & Healthcare Management

Other responsibilities include:

* Conducting Research; Outcomes to be defined with relevant head of department
* Performing Clinical Work on-site in RCSI Teaching Hospitals; Detail and commitment to be defined with relevant head of department
* Ensuring that all Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland policies and procedures are adhered to
* Complying with statutory legislation and Department rules and requirements in furtherance of your own and general staff welfare and safety
* Representing the best interests of the Department/RCSI at all times
* Performing such other duties as may be required from time to time

Additional information

It is envisaged that the successful candidate's work plan would be:

* Clinical Teaching (40%): Participation in the weekly teaching programme for RCSI Graduate and Direct Entry Medicine students, promoting the EM approach to the undifferentiated patient, focusing on critical thinking and clinical decision making for both technical and non-technical skills. Maximise all educational opportunities within the Emergency Department and promote multidisciplinary work.
* Emergency Medicine Curriculum Development and Assessment (20%): this would include the development of specific EM educational resources.
* EM Audit/Research and Quality Improvement (20%): introduce medical students to audit, research and quality improvement within the EM environment with an emphasis on developing sustainable projects that the medical students can engage with fully and complete.
* EM Clinical Care (20%): One clinical shift per week

Candidate Specification: Essential

The successful candidate should:

* Have an in-depth understanding of the Emergency Medicine Ethos
* Possess evidence of registration with the Irish Medical Council
* Possess a keen interest in lecturing and interacting with undergraduate students
* Possess excellent communication skills

Desirable

It would be advantageous if the successful candidate had:

* Previous experience using E-learning/VLE systems
* Previous experience of teaching and assessing students in an academic environment
* Previous experience in research
* Completed CSTEM training (Core specialist training in EM)
* Completed at least 4 years of clinical experience post-internship
* MRCPI / MRCSI or equivalent
