Job Purpose
The role is responsible for the delivery of a high-quality service in line with the standards of an acute medical, oncology, and cardiology ward.
As a key member of both the Nursing and senior management teams, the CNM2 on St Mark's will demonstrate strong clinical, leadership and management skills, promote excellence in patient care, and foster effective communication and collaboration with colleagues across the hospital.
The post holder will act as a role model for professional practice and quality care delivery.
The CNM2 will communicate and collaborate with medical, nursing and multidisciplinary teams, including Consultants, to support the delivery of safe, high-quality and continuous patient care.
The role is central to the coordination and management of nursing and delegated activities, including the effective allocation and management of resources within the unit.
The position requires a strategic approach to service development and operational structures, supporting continuous quality improvement and leading the changes necessary to achieve organisational objectives.
The role demands a broad range of professional knowledge and skills, including expertise in communication, leadership, teaching, staff development and change management.
Job Background/Context
Blackrock Health Hermitage Clinic (BHHC) is a private hospital providing a full range of medical and surgical care across a broad spectrum of specialities.
St Mark's provides care to a range of specialties including oncology/haematology, respiratory, cardiology and this role is important in making a significant contribution, developing and maintaining best practice in medical services.
Key Responsibilities
Service Delivery and Operational Management
Lead and manage the ward/service, taking responsibility for the safe delivery, coordination and continuous improvement of nursing services, ensuring effective, efficient and high-quality specialist care.
Plan, develop and monitor service delivery, including human and budget resources, to ensure safe and effective use of resources.
Contribute to the planning and development of specialist nursing services, innovation and service improvements.
Ensure nursing care is evidence-based, informed by current research and consistent with best practice.
Coordinate patient flow and elevate issues impacting patient management, bed utilisation or delays in care to relevant medical and nursing leadership.
Ensure clinical and non-clinical support services are effective, timely and economically utilised.
Maintain accurate and appropriate clinical, operational and administrative records.
Monitor stock, equipment and resource usage, identifying opportunities for efficiencies and cost savings.
Work collaboratively with IT and clinical teams to support development and optimisation of electronic systems for patient management.
Undertake service reviews and contribute to annual reporting, service planning and achievement of organisational objectives.
Ensure staff are familiar with critical incident and emergency response procedures and that the clinical area is prepared to respond effectively.
Communication and Collaboration
Foster effective communication with patients, families, visitors and the multidisciplinary team, ensuring dignity, confidentiality and patient-centred care are maintained.
Build effective relationships with Consultants, Nursing Management, Clinical Nurse Specialists, NCHDs and multidisciplinary colleagues to support safe and efficient service delivery.
Liaise regularly with the Assistant Director of Nursing, providing feedback on service activity, issues and opportunities for development.
Promote a culture of openness and responsiveness to patient feedback and support initiatives that improve the patient experience.
Develop collaborative links with internal departments and external healthcare providers to enhance continuity and quality of care.
Leadership and People Management
Provide strong clinical and operational leadership, including supervision, coordination and deployment of nursing and support staff.
Ensure effective workforce planning, skill mix and rostering to meet service needs and fluctuations in workload.
Promote a professional culture of accountability, responsibility and high standards of practice.
Support recruitment, retention, induction and orientation of nursing and support staff.
Support staff performance development through annual reviews, personal development plans and ongoing feedback.
Foster a positive work environment that supports staff morale, communication, teamwork, retention and good industrial relations.
Monitor workforce indicators such as absenteeism, turnover and staff engagement, implementing improvement actions where needed.
Participate in and contribute to meetings, committees and communication forums to support service and organisational goals.
Learning, Education and Staff Development
Support professional and personal development opportunities for nursing and support staff through training needs assessment and education planning.
Ensure compliance with mandatory training requirements and support specialty development and continuing professional development.
Maintain oversight of professional practice requirements, including compliance with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland standards and scope of practice requirements.
Develop and implement competency assessment programmes relevant to the clinical area.
Support mentorship, preceptorship and learning opportunities for staff and students.
Facilitate study leave and education resources in line with policy and available resources.
Contribute to patient and family education to support understanding, self-management and engagement in care.
Promote shared learning opportunities, including cross-training and service-specific upskilling initiatives.
Quality Improvement, Risk and Governance
Ensure compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, legislation, standards and regulatory requirements, including readiness for inspections and accreditation.
Promote continuous quality improvement through audit, evaluation, innovation and evidence-based practice.
Set and monitor service objectives, standards and key performance indicators, using audit findings to support improvement.
Lead and support accreditation requirements and service quality initiatives.
Participate fully in the organisation's risk management programme and support implementation of safety systems and statutory requirements.
Promote a culture of safety, including incident and near miss reporting, investigation and implementation of corrective actions.
Address ethical, quality and service issues proactively in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and hospital management.
Support the development and review of standard operating procedures and other governance controls that strengthen service quality and patient safety.
Knowledge/Experience
Be registered in the general division of the Register of Nurses maintained by NMBI
Have at least five years recent relevant post-registration nursing experience (full-time or equivalent hours part-time) in an acute hospital setting and a minimum of two years nursing experience in nursing management
Have a recognised post-registration nursing course - Higher Diploma or Post Grad course, in a relevant nursing discipline or be in pursuit of same.
