Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) - Breast Care
Full‑time (37.5 hours per week) – Permanent
Candidate Criteria:
* Be registered in the General Division of the Register of Nurses kept by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
* Relevant postgraduate clinical qualification in breast care.
* Have at least five years post‑registration experience.
* A minimum of two years recent experience in specialist care of breast‑care patients.
* Recent experience in a nurse‑management role (desirable).
* Competent in clinical breast examination and wound care (desirable).
* Strong people‑management and change‑management experience (desirable).
The Purpose of This Role:
The Breast Care CNS will be part of the consultant‑led multidisciplinary team within the hospital responsible for the overall care of patients with breast disease. They will demonstrate a caring, competent manner to instil patient confidence and contribute to an environment that is centred on the needs of breast patients and their families.
They will demonstrate an ability to interpret and promote evidence‑based practice within the field of breast care. They will provide effective and efficient care to the patient.
The post holder will work closely with the consultant surgeon in breast care and have a pivotal role in service planning and development, coordinating and managing activity and resources within the breast‑care service.
The aim of the post is to maximise the operational efficiency of the breast‑care services through the allocation and effective use of all hospital resources and utilisation of facilities.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
* Manage the activities of the breast‑care service from initial consultation to pre‑assessment, surgery, treatment and discharge, liaising with consultants, nursing staff, breast radiologists, breast surgeons and all other healthcare professionals and support services.
* Efficient running of breast‑care service and undertake required duties including clinical breast examination, wound care, post‑operative drain management, patient education on breast self‑examination, coordination of diagnostic imaging (e.g., mammography, ultrasound) and support for patients undergoing biopsy, surgery and management of benign and malignant breast conditions as per service requirements.
* Communicate results of assessments, treatment and care programmes and recommendations to the team and relevant others in accordance with service policy or as required.
* Develop metrics for quality monitoring and performance review.
* Chair the Breast Care User Group as per the terms of reference and engage with the relevant stakeholders.
* Liaise closely with other heads of departments within the hospital (e.g., theatre, TVN, radiology) and those providing support services to the breast‑care department to ensure the delivery of an effective and efficient service.
