Physiotherapist - UPMC Aut Even

Location: Aut Even Hospital

Overview of role:

The role of the Physiotherapist is to provide excellent patient care and treatment within the Physiotherapy Department, ensuring that best practice procedures, standards and protocols are adhered to and implemented at all times. The physiotherapist will work closely with medical, nursing and allied healthcare professionals to provide a planned, coordinated approach to treatment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities:

* The post holder will provide evidence-based physiotherapy assessment and treatment to patients across the hospital departments as required.
* Actively participate in organising and coordinating the work of the Physiotherapy Department, ensuring the provision of a comprehensive, high-quality service.
* Facilitate shared ownership of decision making with the service user and supports the delivery of patient centred careEnsure a safe environment is maintained for patients, staff and visitors in conjunction with the hospital Health and Safety policies.
* To keep informed of any changes to the hospital's strategic plan and ensure work practices are in accordance with this.
* Adheres to the ISCP Rules of Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice, the PRB Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics and the Europe Region of World Physiotherapy Quality Assurance Standards of Physiotherapy Practice and Delivery. To assist in risk management programme for the physiotherapy department or as part of the wider multi disciplinary team.
* To ensure that professional and personal training needs are fulfilled in order to provide that optimum service.
* To facilitate the sharing of information and continuous professional development through in-service programmes.
* To ensure effective intra and inter departmental communication.
* To facilitate and encourage continuous quality improvement.
* To encourage the pursuit of clinical excellence.
* Agree with team members the allocation of tasks to achieve the best use of the skills of team members.
* To liaise with the Physiotherapy Manager to become familiar with and develop a thorough understanding of accreditation/clinical standards from a physiotherapy perspective.
* Access all documents, policies and procedures and report incidents and complaints through our hospital quality management system Q-Pulse.


Clinical:

* Use comprehensive, factual, and theoretical knowledge to practice safely with an awareness of limits of knowledge, practice, and skill base. Refer to others when appropriate and in a timely manner.
* Select and implement appropriate assessment, treatment, and management skills to provide quality service, in line with best available evidence.
* To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients, and to organise this efficiently and effectively with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.
* To report pertinent observations and relevant changes in clinical status regarding patients to medic al and/or nursing personnel and to record these observations and actions.
* To be flexible and where necessary take on additional caseloads to meet the changing demands of the service.
* To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to relatives, carers and other professionals to promote understanding of the aims of physiotherapy and to ensure a consistent approach to patient care.
* To make decisions regarding patients' appropriateness and safety for discharge.
* Contribute and support the quality and patient safety agenda.
* To fully participate as a member of the multi-disciplinary team
* To participate in the provision of weekend physiotherapy services for the hospital as required


Leadership

* To decide priorities for own work area, balancing patient related and professional demands, and ensuring these remain in accordance with the department as a whole.
* To be responsible for equipment used in carrying out physiotherapy duties, and to adhere to the departmental health and safety policy. This must include competence to use the equipment and to ensure the safe use of equipment by others through teaching, training and supervision of practice, including manual handling in line with the UPMC Aut Even Hospital policy.
* Assist in maintaining stock control required to carry out clinical work.
* To be aware of the health and safety aspects of your work and implement any policies which may be required to improve the safety of your work area, including the prompt reporting and recording of accidents.
* To comply with the organisational and departmental policies and procedures and be involved in the reviewing and updating as appropriate.
* To identify where the service efficiency can be improved and link in with senior colleagues
* To actively engage in the clinical supervision and appraisal of self and others e.g. students.
* To acts as a positive role model, leading through example.
* To demonstrate self-awareness, self-reflection, and self- management in developing leadership skills

Professional Accountability and Development:

* To keep abreast of changes and developments in the practice of physiotherapy and to ensure that best evidence practice is pursued.
* To participate in flexible working hours and location of practice to optimise the availability of the service for patients, including out of hours service as required, often working in isolation.
* Actively participate in changes to work practice, procedures, techniques and technologies having regard to developments in the field of Physiotherapy in accordance with agreed core standards and quality assurance programmes.
* To maintain accurate and up to date documentation in line with legal and departmental requirements, including the production of appropriate reports, letters and treatment summaries.
* Participate and implement skills learned in the Manual Handling Training Programme.
* Be actively involved in quality initiatives on a hospital wide basis.
* Maintain, develop and enlarge own professional knowledge, skills and aptitudes to respond to a rapidly changing healthcare environment and service.
* Participate in continuing education and research activities consistent with the position.
* To work collaboratively with MDT colleagues across the health and social care services to ensure delivery of a co-ordinated multidisciplinary service.
* To actively participate in the staff appraisal scheme and development of personal development plans as an appraiser and appraisee.To be able to identify individual needs for development.To provide timely and constructive feedback to others as appropriate and facilitate means to achieve development needs and ensure others do likewise.
* To be actively involved in the collection of appropriate data and statistics for the use of the department.
* To assist with the design and development of information leaflets containing advice, exercises and/or stretched for a variety of musculoskeletal problems.


Audit and Research:

* Initiates, participates in and evaluates audit.
* To ensure clinical Physiotherapy activities are evidence based.
* To evaluate current research in physiotherapy treatments and make recommendations for implementation as appropriate.

Quality & Safety

* Quality and safety are rooted in the daily work of all individuals at UPMC Aut Even Hospital. As an employee you are required to actively participate throughout your working day in the pursuit of excellence.
* You are required to work in conjunction with your line manager in the planning, monitoring, analysing and improvement of all quality and lean programmes.

* All accidents within the department must be reported immediately to the Head of Department.
* In accordance with the Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Act 1989, all staff must comply with all safety regulations.Health & Safety Statement available in each department and all staff are asked to read and adhere to the documentation.




Qualifications & Experience:

Essential:

* BSc/Masters degree in Physiotherapy
* A qualification in Physiotherapy equivalent to the above
* CORU registration or eligible and pending same.
* BSc Degree in Physiotherapy or equivalent
* Membership of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists.

Experience:

* Demonstrate sufficient clinical knowledge and evidence based practice in the management of Respiratory, Medical, Orthopaedic musculoskeletal caseloads.
* Experience in pelvic health advantageous
* Demonstrate sufficient experience working in a multi-disciplinary team.

Job Specific Competencies and Knowledge:

* Evidence of professional development in the area of physiotherapy
* Knowledge of the Irish Private Hospital setting.
* Understanding and experience of audit and clinical effectiveness.
