About the Role
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is a key member of the Design Department, responsible for leading the development of high-quality, innovative and commercially competitive products for the food industry.
This role combines hands-on design work with leadership responsibilities, mentoring junior engineers and driving continuous improvement across design processes.
You will work closely with Project Engineers and other departments to ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget and to the required quality standards.
Responsibilities
Lead the creation of detailed 3D parts and assemblies in SolidWorks and produce comprehensive manufacturing drawing packs, including drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), laser profiles and work orders.
Develop and implement design standards, processes and best practices to ensure consistency, efficiency and compliance with mandatory legislation and company standards.
Review and approve drawings, conduct design reviews and ensure data quality across the design team.
Plan and coordinate the daily activities of design team members, providing guidance and resolving technical queries.
Mentor and develop junior engineers, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
Work with Project Engineers to ensure design requirements are met and projects are executed successfully.
Capture and incorporate design changes made during manufacturing, installation or commissioning into future outputs.
Liaise with customers and suppliers for design reviews, approvals and sourcing of materials and components.
Conduct site visits for information gathering, surveys and customer liaison.
Promote a Right-First-Time culture and ensure all design output conforms to quality standards.
Identify and implement cost savings and improvements in manufacturing processes and product designs.
Stay current with industry trends, tools and technologies to drive innovation within the design team.
Assist in the development of departmental communications, key performance indicators and performance monitoring.
Support cross-functional teams, including quality, manufacturing and installation, with technical expertise.
Qualifications
Degree-level qualification in mechanical or a related engineering discipline (or equivalent industry experience).
Proven experience in a senior design engineering role within a manufacturing environment, including transferring bespoke product designs into production.
Demonstrated experience leading or mentoring a team of design engineers and delivering projects to schedule, budget and quality requirements.
Proficiency in SolidWorks 3D and AutoCAD 2D; extensive experience with sheet metal and fabrication design is advantageous.
Knowledge of the food processing industry and associated standards is desirable.
