Details of Service
An integrated care ophthalmology service for adults and children has been developed in Kilnamanagh Tymon Primary Care Centre in line with the recommendations outlined in the Primary Care Eye Services Review Group Report.
The staff nurse will work as part of the established multidisciplinary Primary Care Eye Team (PCET) which currently includes two Consultant Ophthalmologists, clinical optometrists, an orthoptist and an ophthalmic technician. Adult and paediatric clinics are delivered from Kilnamanagh Tymon Primary Care Centre in Tallaght with a paediatric service also delivered in Kildare primary care centre.
The PCET delivers paediatric and adult ophthalmic care including pre and post-operative cataract clinics, glaucoma clinics, anterior segment laser and medical retina clinics with an intravitreal injection service to be initiated in 2025. The service is integrated with the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH). The service is paperless with all clinical information being recorded on an electronic ophthalmology system (MediSIGHT). Key responsibilities of the successful candidate will be to assist the delivery of the intravitreal injection service (including assisting the injector during the procedure, taking OCT images, patient education) and supporting the delivery of the cataract pre-op assessment service (undertaking nursing assessment of patients listed for surgery). The candidate may also be required to work in other clinics
including glaucoma, medical retina and paediatric clinics.
Purpose of the Post
The Staff Nurse will assess, plan, implement and evaluate care to the highest professional and ethical standards within the model of nursing care practiced in the integrated Ophthalmology service. The staff nurse will provide holistic, person centred care, promoting optimum independence and enhancing the quality of life for service users.
