Job Description

Charter Medical Private Hospital (CMPH) is a 77-bed surgical hospital located on the outskirts of Mullingar with four operating theatres and an endoscopy unit. We provide a wide range of surgical care across multiple specialties and offer 24/7 Stepdown, Minor Injuries, and Rapid Access services in collaboration with the HSE.

We are currently recruiting for a Staff Nurse - Surgical to join our team.

Role Summary

The Staff Nurse in the Surgical Ward is responsible for delivering safe, high-quality, and compassionate nursing care to patients undergoing surgical procedures. The role involves providing pre- and post-operative care, working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, and ensuring adherence to professional standards and hospital policies. The Staff Nurse supports the Clinical Nurse Manager in maintaining clinical excellence, patient safety, and an optimal patient experience.

Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical Practice:

* Deliver high standards of evidence-based nursing care to patients in the surgical ward.

* Assist in pre-operative preparation and post-operative recovery of surgical patients.

* Monitor and assess patients' conditions, document findings, and promptly escalate concerns.

* Administer prescribed medications and treatments safely and accurately.

* Maintain accurate and comprehensive nursing records in line with professional and hospital standards.

* Promote infection prevention and control measures in all aspects of care.

2. Patient-Centred Care:

* Prioritise patient safety, dignity, and comfort at all times.

* Provide clear information and emotional support to patients and their families throughout their care journey.

* Involve patients and families in care planning, discharge preparation, and education regarding post-operative care.

3. Teamwork and Communication:

* Work collaboratively with surgeons, anaesthetists, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.

* Communicate effectively with colleagues, ensuring continuity of care during shift handovers.

* Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and contribute to discharge planning.

4. Professional and Quality Standards:

* Adhere to the NMBI Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics and hospital policies.

* Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and research as required.

* Support implementation of best practice guidelines and hospital accreditation standards.

* Report and document incidents or near misses in accordance with hospital policy.

5. Education and Professional Development:

* Engage in ongoing professional education and reflective practice.

* Participate in ward-based teaching, mentoring of student nurses, and induction of new staff.

* Maintain up-to-date knowledge of surgical nursing, infection control, and patient safety principles.

6. Health and Safety:

* Comply with all hospital health and safety and infection control policies.

* Report hazards, accidents, and equipment faults promptly.

* Maintain a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

Essential Criteria - Knowledge/ Experience

Eligible applicants will be those who on the closing date for the completion can demonstrate the following.

1. Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc

(i) Are registered in the relevant division of the Register of Nurses & Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann) or entitled to be so registered.

(ii) Have at least 3 years post registration full time experience (or an aggregate of 3 years post registration full time experience) of which 1 year post registration full time experience (or an aggregate of 1 year's post registration full time experience) must be in the speciality or related area.

(iii) Have the clinical and administrative capacity to properly discharge the functions of the role.

(iv) Candidates must demonstrate evidence of Continuing Professional Development.

2. Annual registration

(i) On appointment, Practitioners must maintain live annual registration on the relevant division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann).

(ii) Confirm annual registration with NMBI to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC).

3. Health

Candidates for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

4. Character

Candidates for and any person holding the office must be of good character.

5. Post Specific Requirements

* Experience in a post-operative or acute surgical setting.

* Experience with electronic health records and clinical audit tools.

* Participation in continuous improvement or patient safety projects.

* Offers reassurance and emotional support to patients and their families during the surgical journey.

* Works effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, recognising and valuing the contributions of all team members.

* Supports colleagues, promotes a positive ward culture, and contributes to shared learning and service improvement.

5. Time Management and Organisational Skills

* Prioritises and manages workload effectively in a busy and fast-paced surgical environment.

* Adapts quickly to changing clinical situations while maintaining safe and efficient patient care.

6. Adaptability and Initiative

* Demonstrates flexibility in responding to dynamic patient needs and service demands.

* Identifies opportunities to improve practice and contributes to innovation and continuous improvement within the ward.
