INTERNAL & EXTERNAL COMPETITION Applications are invited for the following position within the LABORATORY in the Rotunda Hospital Ref No: ******** Senior Medical Scientist Microbiology/Serology/Andrology Permanent, Full-Time The Rotunda Hospital Dublin is the oldest continually operating maternity hospital in the world.
It is now a large tertiary referral unit, delivering **** to **** women per annum The Department of Laboratory Medicine in the Rotunda Hospital was established in **** and has been delivering a comprehensive Pathology service ever since.
The hospital is a city center location with easy access via public transport.
The laboratory provides a 24/7 service.
Out of routine hours this is provided by two staff members.
This post is within the Microbiology/Serology Department and will report to the Chief Medical Scientist.
The Department offers a large repertoire of tests including those that are accredited under ISO: ***** standards (see INAB 208MT for full scope of accreditation).
Outside of routine Microbiology and Serology, the department provides an Andrology Service for the whole of Ireland.
There is a number of Molecular testing available within both the Microbiology and Serology departments.
The laboratory is part of a multi-disciplinary team for the identification and management of antenatal patients with rare antibodies and those likely to cause HDN Purpose of the Post Assist in implementing a clinical laboratory service that supports the clinical needs of the patients Assist in the implementation of operational processes to the standards of best practice, in order to optimise use of resources Assist in the implementation of a quality management programme which is patient centred and which measures and audits performance and client satisfaction Essential Requirements: Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc (a) Candidates for appointment must:
(i) Be registered on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU.

(ii) Applicants who satisfy the conditions set out in Section 91 of the Health and Social Care Professionals Act ****, (see note 1 below*), must submit proof of application for registration with the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU.
The acceptable proof is correspondence from the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU confirming their application for registration as a Section 91 applicant was received by the 30th March ****.
AND
(iii) Possess one of the following NFQ Level 9 post graduate qualifications or equivalent qualification at minimum Level 9 validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine; MSc Clinical Laboratory Science, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT).

(iv) An equivalent qualification at minimum Level 9 validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM).
OR
(v) Possess Fellowship of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine awarded before July ****.
OR
(vi) Have attained the Fellowship examination of the Institute of Biomedical Science (Awarded prior to ****).
AND
(vii) Possess four years full time clinical experience (or an aggregate of four years full time clinical experience) as a medical scientist in a clinical diagnostic laboratory since qualifying as a medical scientist.
AND
(viii) Demonstrate evidence of Continuous Professional Development.
AND (b) Candidates must have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and management ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.
2.
Annual registration
(i) On appointment, practitioners must maintain annual registration on Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU And
(ii) Practitioners must confirm annual registration with CORU to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC).
Should have at least two years experience as a medical scientist working in a Microbiology laboratory.
Knowledge and understanding of Microbiology techniques is desirable.
Must be able to work as part of a team and occasionally on their own.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities 1.Maintain throughout the hospital awareness of the primacy of the patient in relation to all hospital activities 2.Assist in implementing a clinical laboratory service that supports the clinical needs of our patients 3.Assist in training staff as required 4.Assist in the implementation of operational processes to the standards of best practice, in order to optimise use of resources 5.Assist in the implementation of a quality management programme which is patient centred and which measures and audits performance and client satisfaction 6.Actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities consistent with the position 7.Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the values of the hospital 8.Comply with relevant procedures, methods and quality standards/ policies as documented in The Quality Manual.
Ref: QMn-GEN-**** Quality Manual 9.Perform routine work to the highest professional standards, as determined by the Laboratory Management Team 10.Be responsible for the quality of their work and carry out their duties in accordance with hospital policy 11.Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or hospital information 12.Participation is encouraged in out-of-hours laboratory emergency work according to hospital policy 13.In co-operation with the Consultant Head of Department, Chief Medical Scientist and other designated senior staff, participate in the introduction of new ideas and methods according to hospital policy 14.Ensuring that the laboratory operates within a quality management system that meets the requirements of ISO ***** Medical laboratories Requirements for quality and competence 15.Participate as required in the registration and stock level of laboratory reagents and materials 16.Receive and record details of mishaps, complaints and defects in supplies and equipment, investigate the circumstances with appropriate team members and take the necessary action and report findings as required, and as determined by the departmental chief.
17.Ensure the policy in relation to laboratory record keeping is followed 18.Co-operate in evaluating new equipment and consumable items 19.Assist in carrying out the Major Emergency Plan for isolated incidents and multiple trauma according to the Laboratory Management Team policy 20.Ensure, in co-operation with the consultant(s), laboratory manager and other designated senior staff, appropriate compliance with the International and National Guidelines and standards of provision of Laboratory Services and actively participate in internal and external quality control and quality assurance 21.Assist in the training of new staff and non-microbiology staff for the purpose of on-call service.
22.Participate in the management and running of the computer-integrated laboratory system 23.Make the most effective and efficient use of development in information technology for both patient care and administrative support in a manner that integrates well with systems throughout the organisation.
24.Commit to the requirements of ISO ***** Medical Laboratories-Particular Requirements for Quality and Competence 25.Assist along with the Chief Medical Scientist the adherence to Health and Safety within a Biological Class two laboratory, including environmental monitoring, appropriate PPE and ensuring a safe working environment.
