Munster Technological University (Cork), incorporates the Bishopstown Campus together with the Crawford College of Art & Design, Cork School of Music, 46 Grand Parade and the National Maritime College.
The Buildings & Estates Office (B&E) is responsible for the overall management of the University Estate, including Facilities Management, Buildings & Grounds Maintenance etc.
The Office provides integrated support services related to the physical infrastructure and facilities management of the university.
The university is now seeking applications from candidates for the post of Technical Assistant 1 to serve as part of the B & E Team.
The Technical Assistant will report to the Maintenance Supervisor and will be a competent, experienced general operative with a hands-on attitude, working as part of a multidisciplinary B & E team.
The appointee will assist in the day-to-day operation and maintenance of facilities, liaise closely with other members of the maintenance team.
The role requires flexibility in terms of tasks and responsibilities.
The position requires an enthusiastic person who is self-motivated and able to work with the minimum of supervision on a wide variety of tasks and may involve some travel between MTU campuses.
Main duties and responsibilities will include but not limited to: 1.
The nature of the post requires flexibility as you will assist with the general upkeep, repair and maintenance of physical facilities both internal and external.
2.
Carry a two-way radio, phone as supplied by the University.
3.
Collecting waste from external and internal bins and transport to Recycling Areas.
4.
Assist in the movement of goods, furniture and materials within the University as required.
5.
Check toilets and classrooms for damaged items and compile list for Supervisor.
Assist with repairs where required.
Inform supervisor of any damaged property and dangerous incidents.
6.
Check windows and doors for any damage and compile list.
7.
Cleaning of windows and high-level dusting of areas.
8.
General cleaning, power wash, clearing roof areas and sweep areas.
9.
Assist craftsmen when required.
10. Operate mechanical plant e.g Gator, forklift etc.
when instructed and trained to do so.
11. Assist with recycling, energy reduction schemes, fire drills and legionella controls.
12. Assist with ground maintenance, drain, gully & roadway cleaning, spreading salt in cold weather conditions.
13. Observe, follow and assist with Health & Safety procedures.
Attend H & S training and courses when requested.
14. Ensure that any accommodation provided is kept in a clean and presentable condition at all times.
15. Carry out any other duties that may be required by the Maintenance Supervisor or Estates Management Team from time to time.
The successful candidate will have minimum academic qualifications and experience as follows: Essential: have a good standard of education to minimum Junior (formerly Intermediate, or Group certificate level), or equivalent, or successfully served a certified trade apprenticeship physically fit and in good health to undertake work of a physically demanding nature.
have 5 years experience of basic building repairs and maintenance.
hold or previously held a Safe Pass Card.
have a full, clean driving licence.
Have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate successfully.
Ability to work effectively on own initiative and in a team environment with the ability to take instructions.
Be flexible and can adapt to changing needs.
Have good organisational skills.
Desirable: Trades or technical background.
Have a good knowledge and awareness of relevant Health & Safety Legislation.
Experience in the operation of machinery and hand tools.
A basic knowledge of computers.
Terms of the Appointment: Salary Scale: €43,828 - €45,203 per annum Permanent whole-time position 39 hours per week Annual leave: 22 days per annum.
