The Department of Physical Sciences at MTUs Cork Campus delivers QQI level 6 to level 10 programmes in core areas of (i) Analytical Chemistry/QA (ii) Instrument Physics/Industrial Process Control and (iii) Environmental Science.
The Department of Physical Sciences is located within the School of Science and Informatics, which also includes the Departments of Biological Sciences, Computer Science and Mathematics.
The department has in the region of 500 registered students, approximately 50% of these are full time students while the remaining cohort of students build their learning through MTUs part time or ACCS delivery mode.
The department also hosts a vibrant postgraduate research community, focusing on research associated with areas such as Photonics and High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry.
Undergraduate programmes in Physical Sciences have a strong emphasis on lab-based analytical and industrial instrumentation skills development and are supported by industry-relevant instrumentation labs, systems interfacing laboratories and other specialist facilities.
The department maintains a number of unique laboratories related to industrial instrumentation, air and water quality analysis, and industrial process control and process automation.
Furthermore, the department supports the Environmental Protection Agencys national air quality monitoring network ( as well as hosting a suite of advanced analytical tools for high resolution gas and liquid analysis.
A team of highly skilled technical staff within the Department manage and maintain these facilities and liaise with academic staff and students to provide a highly supportive learning environment.
MTU now invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the position of Technical Officer Physics/Instrumentation in the Department of Physical Sciences Cork Campus.
The position is based primarily in MTUs Bishopstown Campus but may involve travel between Campuses and the appointee will report to the Head of Department of Physical Sciences.
This line management arrangement may be amended as MTUs organisational structure evolves over time.
Principle Duties & Responsibilities: Main duties and responsibilities of the role include (but not limited to) within the assigned Department/Function area: Planning and safe preparation of Physics/Instrumentation/Control & Automation laboratory practical sessions, working closely with the departments technical and lecturing teams.
Maintaining assets register within the area.
Liaising with Head of Department on Scheduling of laboratory timetables Liaising with Head of department on financial matters relating to lab operation (equipment purchasing, laboratory design and upgrade).
Stock checking, procuring and upgrading equipment as required and where budgets are available Working with the Head of Department to ensure that health and safety policies are implemented within the department Scheduling maintenance and calibration for equipment in the laboratories Assisting in the preparation of laboratories for scheduled classes and project work.
Qualification Requirements for role: Essential: The minimum qualification for the position will be a relevant qualification of at least Level 8 honours degree under the QQI Framework from a recognized degree awarding authority, in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline area.
AND Not less than three years of relevant experience subsequent to obtaining the above qualification.
Desirable: Experience of working in a laboratory setting Strong interpersonal and oral/written communication skills Organised, attention to detail and experience with following SOPs, QC/QA procedures Strong knowledge and experience of working with industrial and/or research instrumentation and process control/automation systems (PLCs/DCS platforms such as Siemens TIAP/Win CC, Emerson Delta V) Familiarity with health and safety protocols, particularly related electrical equipment (e.g.
ATEX), chemical safety (SDS) and gas handling Strong team focused work ethic Experience with construction/repair of electronics/electrical/pneumatic equipment and systems Familiarity with analytical equipment related to environmental or chemical analysis.
Terms of the Appointment: Salary Scale: €45,691.00 - €76,245.00 pa including one long service increment.
LSI are payable after 3 years service on the maximum of the scale.
Fixed Term whole-time contract up to 21 June 2027 Hours of work: 36.5 hours per week.
Annual leave: 29 days per annum.
