Overview
The Activities Assistant plays a central role in creating a person‑centred home environment for people living with dementia. Guided by the principles of the Butterfly Model of Care, this role focuses on building meaningful relationships, supporting emotional well‑being, and helping residents live in a home‑like atmosphere where daily life feels familiar, comforting, and full of purpose.
Position Details
Unit: The Village Unit, Oakfield Nursing Home. Working hours: 08:00 – 17:00. Reports to Director of Nursing, and in their absence to the Assistant Director of Nursing.
Key Responsibilities
Support a meaningful home environment by incorporating residents’ personal histories, identities, and preferences into daily unit life.
Assist with daily household routines such as serving meals, tidying, decorating, and participating in household tasks (e.g., setting/clearing tables, baking, gardening, folding laundry, sweeping).
Serve breakfast, dinner, and tea, set and clear tables, handle dishwashing, and manage snack and drink service.
Encourage residents to participate in daily activities and support their independence and choice.
Engage residents in conversation, entertainment via TV and radio, and reminiscence activities.
Develop and implement a recreation programme with the Activities Team, including occupational activities.
Create sensory engagement opportunities and maintain kitchenette stock and unit tidiness.
Promote a warm and friendly atmosphere in the unit.
Qualifications & Skills
Qualification in Social Care or QQI Level 5 (advantage).
Experience in dementia care or household‑based support (preferred but not required).
Familiarity with the Butterfly Model of Care (advantage).
Warm, empathetic and person‑centred care approach.
Strong communication and emotional awareness.
Ability to build strong, meaningful relationships.
Willingness to engage in household tasks and adapt to individual preferences.
Creativity, flexibility and comfort with a non‑institutional style of support.
SONAS or Imagination Gym training desirable; willingness to complete training required.
