Applications are invited for the permanent position of Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering from 1st September 2025 at the University of Galway. The university seeks to appoint a world-class individual with specific expertise in kinematics and dynamics of machines to capitalise on and strengthen University of Galway’s international position in the thematic areas of robotics for advanced manufacturing and sustainability. There are many exciting opportunities for fundamental research and technological innovation in kinematics and dynamics to achieve breakthroughs in robotics for manufacturing, construction and infrastructure operation; autonomous air, sea and land vehicles; and offshore renewable energy.

The School is seeking applications from suitably qualified candidates with a competitive background in Mechanical Engineering, with a specific focus on kinematics and dynamics of machines, including design. The successful candidate will develop new teaching, drawing on their expertise and the state-of-the-art research in kinematics and dynamics of machines, to prepare students for careers in rapidly growing industries, including robotics, autonomous vehicles, and renewable energy. They will build a research programme that addresses critical problems faced by industry partners in Ireland, Europe and globally, working closely with colleagues in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and other relevant disciplines.

The successful candidates will actively contribute to the strategic visions of the University of Galway and the College of Science and Engineering. Specifically, they will contribute to research, teaching, student project supervision, and programme administration across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Mechanical Engineering and the School of Engineering. In particular, the taught postgraduate programme offerings in Mechanical Engineering, Intelligent Robotics, and Wind Energy Engineering continue to evolve and grow at University of Galway and the appointees will contribute to this growth.

The appointee will be expected to work with colleagues across the relevant academic disciplines and research institutes of the university and contribute to the excellent research capacity in Mechanical Engineering, which has active clusters in materials, energy, fluid dynamics, manufacturing, computational modelling, ergonomics, acoustics, enterprise systems, and health and safety, and other closely related disciplines, including Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Researchers from the School of Engineering at University of Galway play leading roles in centres and networks including the Ryan Institute, the Institute for Health Discovery and Innovation, the I-Form Research Ireland Centre for Advanced Manufacturing, the MaREI Research Ireland Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine, the SH2AMROCK Hydrogen Valley, and the IEA Wind Technology Collaboration Programme. The successful candidate will be expected to apply for major funding awards, for example from Research Ireland, the European Research Council and Horizon Europe, and will develop national and international collaborations with academia and industry. The new appointees will be expected to disseminate their work through high-quality peer-reviewed journals, high-impact conferences, and workshops.

The successful candidates shall possess:

Primary degree and PhD qualifications in Mechanical Engineering or closely related engineering disciplines.

Experience in third level teaching and the ability to deliver undergraduate and graduate level modules in areas including, but not limited to, kinematics, dynamics, control of machines, design.

An appropriate portfolio of high-quality peer-reviewed publications in the areas of kinematics, dynamics, and control of machines, including design, and their application in fields including robotics, autonomous vehicles, and renewable energy.

A strong commitment to working with colleagues across the School of Engineering within existing, established research centres and groups, and a willingness and ability to develop and lead new research activity and research groupings.

An ability and willingness to conduct programme administration and management in a public service university environment.

An ability to take leadership roles in delivering new programmes, including those of a cross-disciplinary nature with colleagues across the School of Engineering, .

Excellent communication and teamwork skills, and an ability and commitment to develop collaborative relationships with other academic staff in the pursuit of teaching and research objectives of the University of Galway.

A strong commitment to working with the Engineering and closely related industry, particularly in terms of collaborative research.

Salary:€63,624 to €101,498 p.a. (applicable to new entrants effective from January, 2011)

(This appointment will be made on the Lecturer scale in line with current Government pay policy)
