The CFA at National College of Art and Design (NCAD) with the support of Creative Ireland, proposes to research, design, and develop a new module specification “Clinical Creativity” (working title) aimed at undergraduate medical students at University College Dublin (UCD).
The research and development will focus on the intersection between conceptual and design thinking as a novel approach in a clinical setting.
This project aims to research and develop a 5-credit (Level 8) module as a framework to introduce future clinicians to creativity, both as an individual capacity and as a collective resource. It combines knowledge, skills, and imagination with cultural and creative participation to generate approaches that are original, meaningful, and relevant to healthcare.
The project is founded on two complementary strands of NCAD’s expertise. It harnesses creative thinking, cultural awareness, reflective practice, and art and design methodologies as tools for integrating creative and design-led approaches. Design contributes structure, iteration, and collaborative methods that enable problem-framing, prototyping, and innovation in complex systems. Fine art and art-and-health practice contribute reflective, experiential, and critical approaches that invite participants to engage socially in cultural environments and creative processes, integrating broader visual art practices into the clinical curriculum.
This integration aims to enhance observational skills, empathy, communication, cultural competence, and resilience among clinical students, creating value in healthcare contexts. Together, these strands support the development of perceptive, empathetic, and critically aware clinicians who can respond creatively and confidently to the complexities of medical practice.
Key Responsibilities
* Undertake discipline-specific research into creative pedagogy and its application in clinical contexts.
* Map precedents and best practice in design-led healthcare education.
* Collaborate with NCAD and UCD colleagues to define module aims, learning outcomes, and teaching methods.
Curriculum & Resource Design
* Develop a full academic module specification, including syllabus, assessment methods, and learning resources.
* Create creative exercises and reflective tools suited to medical education contexts.
* Prepare publicity texts and materials in collaboration with NCAD/CFA communications team.
Workshops
* Facilitate research workshops and reflective practice sessions.
* Engage with critical friends, creative practitioners, and clinicians where appropriate.
Assessment, Evaluation & Reporting
* Conduct formative and summative evaluation of the workshops and module specifications.
* Document process learning and contribute to the final project report for Creative Ireland
Expected Outputs
* A research and recommendations document for dissemination
* Module specification document to support validated within a higher education institution to include teaching and learning materials.
* Documentation of workshops, creative resources, and evaluation findings.
* Final report document and dissemination.
Person Specification
Essential
* A postgraduate qualification in art, design, or a related discipline.
* Experience in higher education teaching and curriculum development.
* Expertise in creative pedagogy, design-led innovation, or arts and health practice.
* Strong collaborative skills, with experience working across disciplines.
* Ability to design and deliver interactive and reflective learning experiences.
Desirable
* Experience working in healthcare, medical education, or interdisciplinary innovation projects.
* A track record of research, publication, or creative practice in relevant fields.
