IDEA is seeking a new Treasurer to join its voluntary Board (National Council). This role is suited to someone keen to play a key part in advancing social justice, global citizenship and equality through a respected national membership organisation.
This is a key governance role, providing strategic financial oversight and ensuring the organisation maintains the highest standards of financial management, transparency and accountability.
The Treasurer will work closely with the CEO, Operations and Finance Manager, Board Chair and Governance & Finance Subcommittee to support IDEA’s financial sustainability and compliance, helping to safeguard the organisation’s long‑term resilience and impact.

Governance
IDEA is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. It is governed by a voluntary Board (National Council) of nine members who provide strategic oversight and ensure compliance with the Charities Governance Code.
IDEA has a small, highly professional staff team of seven. The Treasurer plays an important governance role in ensuring that appropriate financial systems, controls and oversight mechanisms are in place, while respecting the distinction between governance and operational management.
IDEA recently received a Good Governance Award and is committed to maintaining the highest standards of transparency and accountability.
Role of the Treasurer
The Treasurer is an officer of the Board and a member of the Governance & Finance Subcommittee. The role focuses on oversight, assurance and strategic financial stewardship rather than day‑to‑day financial management.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Oversight and Governance
Oversee the financial affairs of the organisation on behalf of the Board.
Ensure that proper financial records and controls are maintained.
Support the Board in approving annual budgets and monitoring financial performance.
Review management accounts and financial reports presented to the Board.
Provide assurance to the Board that financial resources are being used appropriately and in line with the organisation’s charitable objectives.
Monitor cash flow, reserves and financial sustainability.
Present the audited accounts to members at the AGM.
Compliance and Reporting
Ensure compliance with:
The Charities Act
The Companies Act 2014
The Charities Governance Code
Charities SORP reporting requirements
Support oversight of the preparation and approval of annual financial statements.
Liaise, where appropriate, with the external auditor.
Ensure appropriate financial disclosure in the Annual Report.
Governance & Finance Subcommittee
Actively participate in the Governance & Finance Subcommittee.
Contribute to financial planning, risk oversight and internal control review.
Support the development and periodic review of financial policies (e.g. reserves policy, investment policy, internal controls).
Contribute to organisational risk management discussions, particularly financial risk.
Strategic Contribution
Support long‑term financial planning and sustainability.
Advice on financial implications of strategic decisions.
Work collaboratively with fellow Board members to strengthen governance and organisational resilience.
What the Treasurer is Not Responsible For
Day‑to‑day bookkeeping or financial administration.
Operational financial decision‑making (which rests with the CEO within delegated authority).
Direct management of staff.
Time Commitment
Board meetings: 4-6 meetings per year (online or hybrid, typically 5pm–7.30pm).
Board development day: One in‑person meeting per year.
Annual General Meeting: Attendance required (approx. 2.5 hours).
Governance & Finance Subcommittee: 3–5 meetings per year (online).
Preparation time for meetings is required.
Term of Appointment
Board members serve a three‑year term, with the option of reappointment for a second term.
Who Should Apply?
A professional background in finance, accounting, audit, risk or related fields
An understanding of financial governance in the charity or not‑for‑profit sector (desirable)
Experience reading and interpreting management accounts and financial statements
An appreciation of good governance and fiduciary duties
A commitment to social justice, global citizenship and equality
Previous board experience is welcome but not essential.
