The Academy leads important national research projects, particularly in areas relating to Ireland and its heritage.

The Role Reporting to the Council via the President, the Executive Director is responsible for providing leadership, in collaboration with the President, Officers and Council, to achieve the Academy's goals, as set out in its mission statement and strategic plan.
They will contribute to and drive the development and execution of the Academy's long-term strategy with a view to fostering high quality scholarship and informing public debate.
They will oversee the management of each department and project, while leading and implementing the Academy's long- and short-term plans, as well as ensuring that there are appropriate internal controls for compliance with the corporate governance code.

The Person The role requires a candidate who can demonstrate the ability to implement and move the Academy forward in line with its strategic plan as well as working with the President and Council in setting action plans and evaluating the results.
The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience in a senior management role and a proven track record in organisational leadership with demonstrable experience translating ideas into tangible results.
They will also have experience of and the ability to communicate effectively and represent and advocate for the Academy, externally and internally, and to additionally have effective interpersonal, presentation and oral and written communication skills.

Key responsibilities The role of Executive Director is a key leadership role within the Royal Irish Academy (RIA).
In addition to being the Academy's Accounting Officer, the Executive Director will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
Strategy and Leadership Provide strategic vision and leadership to achieve the RIA's ambitious goals, working closely with the President and Council to ensure the Academy fulfils its mission and realises its strategic objectives.
Oversee the operation of the RIA in accordance with the direction from Council, established in the strategy, business plans, and manage the resources (human, financial, physical) of the Academy in an efficient and effective manner.
Provide oversight of the Academy's research activities, projects and historic library and collections, ensuring appropriate reporting of their work, and facilitating reviews of their activities as required by Council.
Lead, inspire and motivate the senior management team in the RIA, ensuring professional best practice in all areas of activity and ensuring performance management and development training where required.
Drive continuous improvement in systems and processes to uphold the highest standards of efficiency and effectiveness.
Governance and Finance Be accountable to Council for effective leadership of the Academy, ensuring the Council has the information it requires to make effective decisions.
Work with the Council to ensure good corporate governance and oversight, including compliance with the Code of Practice for Governance of State Bodies and the Charities Governance Code.
Report to Council on progress against objectives to Council and other governance committees.
Work with the Executive Committee of the RIA to facilitate effective decision-making and communication.
Work with the Director of Corporate Services to ensure effective management of all areas of organisational risk.
Be accountable for financial management, including the setting of annual budgets, overseeing management accounts, maintaining budgetary control, and upholding financial integrity and audit obligations.
Ensure proper use is made of the RIA's funds, through best practice governance structures and processes.
Partnerships & Stakeholder Engagement Maintain and develop strong relationships with key stakeholders, including funders, the higher education sector and government, such as the Higher Education Authority and the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science.
Lead on the development of partnerships and funding proposals to further the RIA's objectives.
Maintain and strengthen international partnerships to facilitate shared learning and enhance the RIA's global presence.
Provide input into policy development and influence policy and legislation at national, European and international level.
Communication & Culture Maintain a strong public profile and develop and ensure the delivery of the RIA's public engagement and outreach to enhance the RIA's reach and impact.
Represent the RIA, in tandem with the President, in engagements with stakeholders, the public, and the media to ensure clear and effective communication in relation to the work of the Academy.
Promote a culture of open and effective internal communication, ensuring high standards of staff engagement.
Ensure the values of respect, integrity, equality, diversity and inclusion are upheld.
Promote a strong learning and development culture, ensuring the workforce is equipped with the skills needed for both current and future challenges.
The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of:
A qualification on the National Framework Qualifications (NFQ) of Level 9 or higher.
A minimum of 5 years' experience in a senior management role and a proven track record in strategic leadership with an emphasis on leading change and organisational growth.
Experience in corporate governance (working with committees, boards, governance codes).
Strong understanding of operational planning, with an ability to set and monitor the delivery of targets.
Experience in building and maintaining high-performing, collaborative and motivated teams.
Excellent communication skills, with an ability to engage collaboratively and with authority with multiple stakeholders nationally and internationally.
Financial acumen and proven experience in effective financial planning and management.
Awareness of the higher education and research environment, its funding, management and governance.
Strong commitment to excellence, integrity, diversity and inclusion.
The successful candidate may demonstrate evidence of:
Experience of negotiating and securing funding.
Experience and skills in negotiation and mediation with staff and stakeholders.
Knowledge of the national strategy for the Irish language 2010–30.
Experience of working in a member organisation.
