Additional Information
The waymarked National Famine Way is a 165km trail that runs from Strokestown Park, Co Roscommon through to EPIC, The Irish Emigration Museum. The trail is marked with bronze shoes along the trail and is supported with an Official Passport & Pack, a 32-page Passport which can be stamped at over 30 Stamping locations along the Trail, a ship ticket whereby walkers receive the details of a specific Famine Family whose footsteps they walk in, a free National Famine Way App available on Apple and Android. On arrival in Dublin, walkers collect a Completion Certificate at the Irish Family History Centre at EPIC along with information on their Family member. As well as a 30-page colour booklet outlining the story of 1,490 after they arrived in Liverpool, on their transatlantic journey and when they arrived in Canada. The book Hope and Hunger also tells the story of our missing 1,490 from pre-Famine forward.
The Global Irish Famine Way formulated in 2022 extends the National Famine Way by following the journeys of all the Irish Famine emigrants around the world, including the UK, Canada, the United States, South Africa, and Australia. One million men, women and children died as a direct result of the Famine, out of a population of 8 million. Between 1.5 and 2 million left Ireland during and in the immediate aftermath of the Famine. Bronze Shoes mark significant sites around the world, including where Famine emigrants landed, and common or mass graves where they died on their journeys. QR codes will tell the local story and connect to the National Famine Way website for more information.
