Role Summary
This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in the start-up of Kilkenny Cheese Limited. Kilkenny Cheese is a joint venture between Glanbia Ireland and Dutch family business Royal A-ware, a 130-year-old company with strong positions in EU and global markets. The facility is located at a greenfield site adjacent to Glanbia Ireland’s specialised nutrition facility at Belview, Co Kilkenny.

Royal A-ware is a traditional Dutch family business with a passion for food and a strong entrepreneurial attitude. They focus on demand-led, tailored products and services, with recent investments in developing and managing their own supply chains, resulting in independence, efficiency, and flexibility. They specialize in producing, ripening, cutting, and packaging cheese, as well as producing and packaging cream and fresh dairy products.
Based in Belview, South Kilkenny, the role reports to the Environmental, Health & Safety Manager. This position will support the EHS department in administering and implementing the site Environmental Management Systems, with a focus on safety culture and compliance. The role involves carrying out tasks and projects related to EH&S throughout the site.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Work with commissioning contractors and act as the lead representative for KCL in closing out Site Acceptance Tests, Snag lists, and their Key Performance Indicators.
2. Set up the WWTP control room, including ordering lab equipment and consumables.
3. Develop sampling plans, lab manuals, control charts, and organize daily external analysis samples.
4. Manage sludge removal and reordering of chemicals.
5. Relieve as a lab technician when required.
6. Optimize WWTP operations/processes daily using Plant Master.
7. Perform weekly calibrations on field instruments in the WWTP.
8. Monitor in-process equipment in the WWTP by trending to evaluate performance.
9. Lead root cause analyses on environmental issues across the site.
10. Monitor stormwater compliance, including extra monitoring due to limited visuals on Plant Master.
11. Conduct odour patrols outside the site boundary.
12. Liaise regularly with Irish Water.
13. Serve as the point of contact for the EPA.
14. Develop, implement, and maintain environmental management systems for legal compliance.
15. Manage site operational licenses and ensure compliance (e.g., EPA IPC license).
16. Oversee Wastewater Treatment Plant operations.
17. Conduct environmental assessments and audits, including air/water quality, waste management, and soil assessments.
18. Develop and implement environmental policies, waste management, energy conservation, and pollution prevention plans.
19. Monitor and report on environmental performance metrics.
20. Coordinate with other departments and external stakeholders to ensure compliance.
21. Educate and train employees and contractors on environmental issues and best practices.
22. Investigate environmental complaints, violations, and incidents.
23. Support environmental impact assessments and permit applications.
24. Stay updated on environmental laws and regulations, ensuring compliance with new requirements.
25. Participate in emergency response activities.
26. Communicate environmental performance and compliance updates to management and stakeholders.
27. Perform other EH&S duties as assigned.
Key Requirements
* Recognized qualification in Environmental Science or equivalent.
* High technical ability and attention to detail.
Experience
* Full working knowledge of relevant environmental regulations in a food manufacturing environment.
* Ability to influence at all organizational levels.
* Effective verbal and written communication skills.
* Good prioritization and adaptability to production needs.
* Organized, methodical, with excellent attention to detail.
* Good interpersonal skills and integrity.
Person Profile
* Successful track record in project delivery in start-up or large-scale development projects.
* Knowledge of the dairy or similar food processing industry.
* Ability to manage complex projects to completion.
* Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills.
