Role: Control System Specialist (R&D)

Permanent PositionAt Hays Specialist Recruitment we have a great opportunity for a Control System Specialist to join our Air Treatment and Climate Solutions client in Cork on a permanent basis.Role Summary:The ideal candidate should hold a Degree in Control Systems, Mechatronics, Software Engineering, or a related field and 3+ years of experience in software development for control systems, ideally in HVAC, refrigeration, or process environments.Primary responsibilities:
1. Design and develop control logic using Function Block Diagram (FBD) and structured programming methods
2. Integrate and test control software on prototype systems in our R&D lab environment
3. Collaborate closely with mechanical and electrical engineers to define system behaviour
4. Tune and refine control loops (PID, cascaded control, etc.) based on experimental results.
5. Contribute to test planning and support data acquisition and analysis for control validation
6. Assist with documentation, version control, and handover to production where needed
What You Bring:
7. Degree in Control Systems, Mechatronics, Software Engineering, or a related field
8. 3+ years of experience in software development for control systems, ideally in HVAC, refrigeration, or process environments
9. Proficiency in Function Block Diagram (FBD) programming
10. Understanding of control system fundamentals and real-world system dynamics
11. Experience with industrial sensors, PLCs, and automation hardware
12. Ability to troubleshoot, iterate, and collaborate in a hands-on lab setting
Nice to have:
13. Familiarity with Carel and/or Automated Logic Controls (ALC) platforms, though not required
14. Experience working with industrial protocols (Modbus, BACnet, etc.)
15. Background in data centre cooling, refrigeration, or thermal systems
16. Experience in R&D or prototype development environments
