Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Oncology
Permanent Contract, Full Time Hours
The Oncology CNS Role
The Oncology CNS will coordinate systemic anti-cancer treatment for Oncology patients. They will provide specialist nursing care to newly diagnosed patients and those on active Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT). They will support and educate patients and families about SACT, side effects, and provide psychosocial support.
Responsibilities include:
* Provide specialist oncology nursing care, advice, information, and support for patients requiring SACT.
* Educate and support newly diagnosed cancer patients and their families.
* Attend Oncology Consultant Clinics and coordinate patients requiring SACT.
* Identify and facilitate appropriate referral pathways for cancer patients.
* Collaborate with Oncology Clinical Nurse Managers and Surgical CNSs regarding treatment and follow-up.
* Work closely with the Medical Oncology Team, Oncology Pharmacy, Dietitians, Social Work, and Psych-Oncology.
* Coordinate with external hospitals regarding concurrent treatments like radiotherapy.
* Participate in Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings to discuss treatment plans, radiology results, and side effects.
* Advocate for patients and ensure timely, patient-centered care.
* Empower patients and families to participate actively in care.
* Manage Nurse Led Oral Anti-Cancer Medication (OAM) Clinic following National Cancer Control Program (NCCP) guidelines.
* Perform comprehensive holistic patient assessments using Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE).
* Coordinate tests, treatments, and follow-ups safely and efficiently.
* Ensure patients and families are well-informed throughout care.
* Utilize resources effectively and economically.
* Maintain a safe clinical environment with health and safety protocols.
* Accurately document all patient care activities.
* Continuously review and improve the Oncology CNS service quality.
* Participate in oncology professional groups and conferences to stay updated.
* Establish and maintain an Oncology patient database.
* Track relevant data aligned with NCCP Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), as directed by the Director of Nursing.
Eligibility Criteria:
* Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) or eligible for registration.
* Completed an Oncology/Cancer Nursing post-registration program, verified by a QQI or NFQ Level 9 or higher award (equivalent to 60 ECTS or above).
* Minimum of 5 years' post-registration full-time experience, or an equivalent of 5 years' experience in the relevant division.
* At least 2 years' experience in acute Oncology.
* Evidence of ongoing professional development.
* Demonstrate knowledge, suitability, and capacity to perform the role effectively.
* Competent in SACT administration.
