Job Purpose
The Health Care Assistant (HCA) is responsible for supporting the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and Clinical Nurse Manager. The role involves assisting the nurse in duties associated with the smooth running of the ward, ensuring patient comfort, dignity, and safety at all times, and the provision of quality patient care, both administrative and clinical. The HCA will support the smooth running of the ward by assisting with clinical, environmental, and administrative duties in line with hospital policies, infection prevention standards, and best practice guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care and Support
Support patients with activities of daily living, including hygiene, comfort, and mobility
Provide reassurance and support to patients, maintaining dignity, privacy, and respect at all times
Assist nursing staff in monitoring patient comfort and reporting any concerns promptly
Clinical Support
Assist nursing staff in preparing rooms for patients
Support with patient positioning and safe moving and handling practices
Assist with patient care, including monitoring and comfort measures
Assist with Emergency First Aid as directed by clinical staff
Support safe and efficient patient flow within the unit
Infection Prevention and Control
Adhere strictly to hand hygiene and infection prevention and control policies
Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic clinical environment
Support cleaning of equipment, trolleys, and clinical areas in line with hospital guidelines
Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
Nutrition and Hydration
Provide support to patients with hydration and nutrition as appropriate
Assist in monitoring and recording fluid intake as directed by nursing staff
Ensure dietary requirements are followed under the direction of the nursing team
Communication and Teamwork
Work under the supervision of the Registered Nurse and report all relevant information appropriately
Report any patient concerns, discomfort, or changes in condition to nursing staff promptly
Communicate effectively with colleagues to support safe and efficient patient care
Participate in handover processes and maintain clear communication within the team
Health and Safety
Maintain a safe working environment in line with Health and Safety legislation
Report all incidents, accidents, hazards, or faulty equipment promptly
Adhere to manual handling policies and safe work practices
Demonstrate flexibility in rostering and working hours in line with service needs
Administrative and General Duties
Assist with maintaining stock levels and ordering supplies as required
Support general organisation of the ward, including preparation of patient areas
Maintain accurate records as required within the scope of the role
Attend mandatory training and participate in ongoing development
Essential Criteria
Knowledge/Experience: Each candidate must, at the latest date for receipt of completed applications for the post:
Leaving Certificate (or equivalent)
Healthcare FETAC Level 5 Qualification / QQI Major Award in Healthcare (essential)
Patient Care Support / Activities of Daily Living modules desirable
Previous experience in a healthcare setting desirable but not essential
Demonstrated communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
Basic IT literacy and familiarity with electronic patient records desirable.
