Lead Data Engineer (Cloud Platform Lead)
Ireland - Remote
About the Company
A growing SaaS organisation providing data-driven automation and analytics to enterprise clients across Ireland and the UK is modernising its entire data environment. They are moving from an on-premise SQL Server setup to a new cloud-based analytics platform and are investing heavily in scalable, cloud-first technologies, automation, and AI readiness.
About the Position
This is a hands-on leadership role for a senior data engineer who wants to design and build a brand-new cloud data platform end-to-end.
You'll own the architecture, tooling decisions, pipeline design, and data quality framework as the company transitions away from legacy SSIS, Python orchestration, and a single SQL Server environment.
You'll work closely with the Head of Technology and engineering team to create a modern, reliable, and high-performance data platform supporting analytics, financial automation, and machine learning initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the design and build of a new cloud-based data and analytics platform.
* Drive the migration from on-prem SQL Server/SSIS to the cloud.
* Build scalable, automated data pipelines for ingestion from multiple systems (ePOS, finance, third-party APIs).
* Implement data quality, validation, monitoring, and lineage frameworks.
* Optimise Power BI datasets and reporting performance.
* Collaborate with software engineers to improve integrations and data flows.
* Define best practices for data modelling, orchestration, and cost optimisation.
* Contribute to long-term AI and predictive analytics roadmap.
Experience/Requirements
* 5+ years' experience in data engineering or data platform development.
* Strong SQL Server experience (modelling, performance tuning, ETL).
* Experience migrating or building cloud-based data solutions (Azure, AWS, or GCP).
* Hands-on pipeline engineering with modern orchestration tools.
* Power BI data modelling and refresh optimisation knowledge.
* Strong understanding of data governance, lineage, validation, and reliability.
* Practical problem-solving approach and ability to work in a small, fast-moving team.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Nice to Have
* Experience with ADF, Fabric, dbt, Airflow, or similar platforms.
* Exposure to AI/ML, data observability, or metadata frameworks.
* Background in retail, finance, or SaaS data environments.
* Experience with CI/CD and automation for data platforms.
