We are looking for a Principal R&D engineer with a proven track record of experience and success with respect to polymers and extrusions for medical manufacturing to join our Coronary & Renal Denervation (CRDN) therapies. The role supports the Medtronic interventional cardiology portfolio, addressing unmet needs in complex Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) and advancing transformative blood pressure reduction therapy.
Responsibilities
Design, develop, troubleshoot, and provide technical expertise during research and product development.
Effectively represent Medtronic while interacting with physicians to distil their needs into product requirements and concepts.
Provide direction in technical innovation across the department.
Identify and mitigate technological risks throughout the design process.
Apply understanding of anatomy and physiology, coupled with engineering knowledge in materials and processes, to develop functional designs.
Interface effectively and build relationships with team members, other staff, and key technology and component suppliers, both locally and globally.
Guide projects from concept phase into commercialization, playing a key role on product, process, engineering, and technical fronts.
Resolve technical obstacles with existing designs and support portfolio sustaining activities.
Contribute to intellectual property generation.
Coach, mentor, and delegate work to less experienced engineers.
Participate in cross‑site technical forums and build a network within the technical community.
Define and implement strategic goals in the technical community in line with the business unit strategy.
Design studies to investigate specific life‑science questions within the field of expertise.
Qualifications
Degree level 8 in Engineering or related discipline with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or a PhD with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience. Additional qualifications may be advantageous.
Dynamic team player capable of working effectively and proactively on cross‑functional teams.
Extensive medical device product development experience with a strong track record in innovation and technical advisory.
Passionate about engineering concepts and principles, with a drive to understand how and why things work.
Proven influencer with skills in driving large‑scale technical initiatives.
Strong communication and presentation skills.
Deep knowledge and skills in component and system design, materials (polymers and metals), sterilization of medical devices, test method development, Six Sigma principles, CAD (SolidWorks preferred), pre‑clinical evaluations, physician interactions, and ISO standard application for medical devices.

Medtronic offers a competitive salary and flexible benefits package. Pay range in Ireland: 81,120.00 EUR – 121,680.00 EUR. The position is eligible for a short‑term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).
