Overview of Role

UPMC is recruiting for an Anaesthetic Registrar on a Bank/Casual contract at UPMC Whitfield Hospital. The Anaesthetic Registrar is a key member of the hospital’s clinical team responsible for providing and overseeing care to patients in the Operating Theatre, the Cardiac Cath lab, the Critical Care Unit, and any other patients who require acute medical intervention that can be provided by an Anaesthetic Registrar. Key duties include:

* Emergency situations including airway management
* Follow‑up of post‑operative surgical patients
* Acute decompensation of patients
* Management of patients with fluid issues and difficult vascular access
* Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
* Acute pain management
* Collaborating with an Anaesthetic Consultant to formulate management plans


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

As an employee of UPMC, you will also be responsible for the following:

* Providing anaesthesia services for both inpatient and outpatient care
* Participating in departmental teaching and education programs
* Participating in research and quality improvement activities
* Working out of hours on the Anaesthetic Registrar roster
* Handling administrative matters as required by the General Manager or Clinical Director
* Engaging in continuous quality improvement activities
* Observing all hospital policies, procedures and statutory regulations
* Actively contributing to the organisation’s Quality & Safety and Work Health & Safety processes
* Ensuring appropriate medical cover is available at all times in accordance with the European Working Time Directive
* Supervising and being responsible for care provided by the Resident Medical Officer (RMO)
* Participating in selection processes for Resident Medical Officers and other staff
* Participating in clinical audit and proactive risk management
* Attending all code blue and INEWS calls within the hospital
* Assessing deteriorating patients and initiating appropriate care pathways

* Completion of mandatory training (e.g., Fire Training, Radiation Safety, Infection Prevention, ACLS, BCLS, ICHGCP, ICORG PI, Manual Handling)

* Co‑operate with UPMC to ensure statutory regulations and local policies are adhered to
* Act responsibly to avoid interference or misuse of safety measures


Infection Prevention and Control

* Ensure compliance with UPMC’s infection prevention policies and guidelines
* Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge through annual mandatory updates and ongoing professional development
* Challenge poor practices and report breaches via appropriate mechanisms


Information Governance

* Adhere to UPMC’s Information Governance standards and policies
* Maintain confidentiality and secure handling of patient and organisational information
* Avoid unauthorized disclosure of confidential information
* Ensure accurate and up‑to‑date information records


Medication Management

* Adhere to all medication policies relevant to the role
* Document and sign all medications prescribed and administered before, during and after surgical interventions
* Be responsible and accountable for all patients receiving any form of anaesthesia under your care
* Verify and document patients’ current medication on admission when required


Professional Standards and Performance Review

* Participate in mandatory statutory training as appropriate
* Maintain high personal and professional standards in accordance with relevant codes of conduct
* Seek continuous improvement of personal and professional competence
* Engage in UPMC’s appraisal processes and development plan creation


Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults

* Identify and report abuse, and ensure safeguarding awareness training is completed
* Participate in additional safeguarding training relevant to the role


Social Responsibility

* Support UPMC’s commitment to responsible environmental practices and community engagement


Quality & Safety

* Work with the multidisciplinary team to prepare for JCI accreditation
* Provide high standards of patient care throughout the working day


Quality Assurance

* Participate in Quality Control functions set by the Medical Director
* Attend Management, Patient Review, Planning Review, Morbidity & Mortality, Continuous Quality Initiative, Radiation Safety Committee meetings
* Ensure participation in Hospital Management meetings


Education and Research

* Participate in departmental educational meetings and mandatory training (BLC, GCP, Fire safety, etc.)
* Engage in e‑Rounds and external conferences or lectures to meet professional competence requirements
* Participate in research initiatives within the departmental framework and guidelines


Qualifications & Experience

* Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent)
* Current full Medical Council registration
* Fellowship of the College of Anaesthetists desirable
* At least five years of experience as an Anaesthetic Registrar in an acute hospital setting
* Current ACLS and BLS certifications
