Role and responsibilities

* Own the mechanical design function with a focus on class-leading design and manufacturability.
* Drive design and manufacturing innovation by evaluating new technologies, materials, and design methodologies to enhance product performance and reliability.
* Oversee concept development to customer delivery to ensure on-plan project delivery.
* Develop comprehensive design solutions aligned with customer requirements.
* Take ownership of Design & Manufacturing Engineering activities for market releases of wireless routers developed in the Westermo Ireland R&D Centre, covering datacomms technologies including DSL, Wi‑Fi, 4G-LTE and 5G.
* Serve as an internal and external evangelist for product design, manufacturability and timely execution, focusing on design quality, conformity and reliability.
* Lead design for manufacturing and transfer to production, ensuring the certainty of execution timelines.


Responsibilities and Tasks

* Develop design concepts using SolidWorks and prepare specifications enveloping immunity, thermal and climatic requirements, including tolerance stack-ups.
* Conduct risk assessments, DFMEA and design reviews (internal and external).
* Produce engineering documentation such as detailed design drawings and bills of materials; qualify vendors and components as necessary.
* Collaborate extensively to optimise cost, performance and assembly processes.
* Schedule and manage regular update meetings to facilitate progress reporting concerning product design, development, testing, validation and production; address resourcing gaps and mitigation plans when deviations occur.
* Ensure knowledge transfer and pricing clarity by communicating information effectively to manufacturing and operations teams after design completion.
* Promote and embody company values with respect to design excellence and Lean principles.
* Maintain accurate data within the Product Data Management system and specify and source off-the-shelf components where appropriate.
* Design jigs, fixtures and production lines to transition concepts into high-volume production, considering mechanical, electrical and safety requirements.
* Optimise manufacturing performance by improving equipment, processes and layouts to meet production targets with high quality and safety standards.
* Define and optimise packaging to ensure safe, cost-effective and efficient shipping to customers.
* Represent engineering in factory reviews, audits and management meetings as needed.
* Mentor and support members of the manufacturing engineering team.
* Forecast and manage budgets associated with design and manufacturing engineering activities.
* Escalate issues that affect timeline, scope, quality or budget and implement appropriate actions.
* Ensure all developments comply with established processes, policies and systems.


Qualifications / Skills

* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, or equivalent.
* 3+ years (5+ preferred) of experience in mechanical design.
* Strong design and mechanical intuition, attention to detail, and problem-solving ability.
* Understanding of design qualification and acceptance testing at various phases of the development and release cycle.
* Familiarity with design validation and thermal simulation setup and execution.
* Team management experience is a plus but not essential.
* Experience in a low/medium/high mix environment.
* Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and design for manufacturing and assembly.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Experience facilitating project teams meetings, communication and decision making.
* Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
* Strong technical writing and presentation skills.
* A passion for excellence and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
* Self-starter with strong interpersonal skills and a growth mindset.
* Willingness to work occasional abnormal hours and travel domestically and internationally to ensure timely project execution.
