The role Facilities Chargehand Carpenter 1.0 WTE Full Time, Permanent Contract The main purpose of the Facilities Chargehand Carpenter to assist in ensuring the structural safety and appropriateness of the building for the provision of service user care and support activities.
To deputise and assist the Facilities Foreperson.
The Facilities Chargehand Carpenter will report to the Facilities Manager.
The standard working week applying to the post is 39 hours per week, Monday to Thursday 8am 4.30pm and 8am 3.30pm Friday.

Responsibilities Will be competent to manage a team of workers as chargehand.
Will deputise for Facilities Foreperson in their absence.
Will be competent to chair meetings with department staff.
Will demonstrate exceptional organisation skills to be able to prioritise works and schedule upcoming tasks.
Responsible for the overall maintenance relative to the role and requirements of the department and organisation.
To ensure timely and appropriate actioning of all works as issued by Facilities Department.
Undertake tasks generated by the Daily Work Order system and sign off when complete.
Assist with carrying out weekly/monthly critical testing and log same.
Mentor both skilled and unskilled staff.
Manage and maintain building comfort levels by monitoring BMS system when required.
Assist with the maintenance of the Hospitals Salto access and control systems.
Assisting with emergency preparedness planning and practice.
Assist with the upkeep of all signage throughout the Hospital.
Coordinate the placement/assembly and maintenance of new and existing furniture around the Hospital campus.
Manage and assist contractors on specific tasks as required.
Ensure all meter readings are documented and recorded on a scheduled basis, whilst reviewing consumptions monitoring for excessive use.
Partake in Legionella prevention programme and ensure associated PPMs are completed on schedule.

Standards To participate in Facilities Department On Call Roster Operate all hospital vehicles when required.
To ensure all vehicles are maintained in good working order.
Must be competent to work at heights using appropriate apparatus supplied by the hospital after required training is provided.
Assist in ensuring a collaborative and transparent relationship exists between the Health & Safety Department and the Facilities Department by ensuring all Health & Safety requirements are met.
Carry a designated phone and pager for communication purposes and enacting the appropriate response.
Liaise with Facilities Foreman to issue fortnightly report to Facilities Manager / Assistant Facilities Manager on status of works.
Must be available to assist and coordinate staff and works during unforeseen emergencies such as adverse weather conditions to ensure a safe site for staff, service users and visitors.
To react and assist in Fire Alarm activation and any other unforeseen emergencies.
Possess excellent communication skills to regularly inform the Management team on a regular basis on ongoing issues.
Must be willing to participate with all future technology developments relevant to the department Must be competent and willing to undertake basic plumbing and electrical tasks when required and assist with other department staffing shortfalls.
Must be presentable and wear hospital issued uniform and PPE.
Ensure spare part stock levels are maintained and seek quotes as and when required.
Be competent to carry out toolbox talks for contractors and department staff.
Be competent to review RAMS before issuing to H&S department.
Carry out toolbox checks to ensure issued tools are kept safe and maintained.
Project manage minor works related to the facilities department.
Maintain dignity and respect.
Must assist with managing the fire safety systems on site, including passive and active systems and have a good knowledge of fire door maintenance.
Ensure timekeeping standards are at a high level for yourself and all staff.
Manage workshops, compounds, stores, and plantrooms to ensure they are kept clean and safe.
Willing to partake in further training.
Must be available to work outside of normal hours as and when required to ensure the operational requirements of the organisation are maintained, at times this can be at very short notice.

Working Week: The standard hours applying to this position is 39 hours per week.
Salary: The salary for the position is based on the SPMHS 2025 Chargehand scale (€48,388 - €51,093) and dependent on experience, plus allowances.
Daily travel allowance.
Tool allowance.
On Call allowance.
Annual Leave The annual leave associated with this position is 23 days.
Pension: All pensionable staff become members of the pension scheme after successful completion of probation.
The scheme is a defined contribution scheme with a deduction from the salary of the employee of 4%.
In respect of an internal appointment being made the individuals existing pension arrangements will continue.
Probation: The appointee will be appointed in a probationary capacity for the first six months during which time the job holders performance will be subject to ongoing review.
Any extension to or suspension of the period of probation will be in line with the European Union (Transparent and Predictable Working Conditions) 2022.
Health: The appointee must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the position and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
Character: The appointee must be of good character.
Retirement Age: Normal retirement age for employees is 66 years which at present is also normal pension age.
