Support Worker - Bantry Residential - Permanent - Ref C087

CoAction West Cork provides quality services to support children and adults with an intellectual disability, and children with autism. This is achieved by helping each service user reach their full potential, working in partnership with their families and carers, within the community.

Support Worker for Bantry Residential Services, permanent contract, 6 hours per week, waking night, Sunday premium and Saturday allowances.

Responsible to: The Instructor/Area Manager and/or The Social Care Leader. Base: The Adult Services Centre and/or The Group Home.

Overall Purpose of Position: The aim of the adult services training and employment programmes is to develop practical and training skills, increasing innovation, independence, and a sense of achievement for service users. The Support Worker assists the Instructor and/or Social Care Leader in planning, developing, implementing, and reviewing specified programmes.

Main Responsibilities:

* Take guidance from the instructor/Social Care Leader in delivering programmes.
* Awareness of individual service user interests, likes/dislikes, abilities, and communication methods.
* Treat service users with dignity and respect.
* Promote a friendly and supportive environment.
* Encourage greater independence in service users.
* Provide high-quality care and develop caring relationships with service users.
* Incorporate service user interests into daily programmes.
* Assist with personal care (clothing, feeding, toileting, and hygiene) as needed.
* Report accidents, incidents, and complaints.
* Act as an advocate for service users.
* Participate in recreational activities and hobbies.
* Maintain confidentiality.
* Assist with outings, Special Olympics, etc.
* Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
* Liaise with relevant staff.
* Maintain the adult services centre/group home.
* Familiarize yourself with CoAction’s policies, procedures, and Health and Safety regulations.
* Ensure safety and safe working conditions.
* Use protective clothing and machinery.
* Train service users in machinery and tools, and ensure health and safety awareness.
* Report defective equipment.
* Contribute to CoAction’s development.
* Attend to visitors with courtesy and tact.
* Follow cash handling procedures.
* Supervise meals and assist with recreational activities.
* Escorting duties as required.
* Drive company vehicles.
* Develop relevant skills through training courses.

Essential Qualifications/Experience:

* QQI (FETAC) level 5 in Healthcare or equivalent.
* Full Clean Irish Drivers Licence for manual vehicles.

Desirable Qualifications/Experience:

* Relevant qualification in Learning Disabilities, Social Studies, Social Sciences, Nursing, or Childcare.
* Previous experience working with people with intellectual disabilities and/or autism.
* Previous experience supporting people with challenging behaviors.
* MAPA or CPI Training.
* First Aid training.
* Experience with arts, crafts, pottery, gardening, and cooking.

Essential Skills:

* Effective communication (verbal and written).
* Basic IT skills (typing and Microsoft Word).
* Team player with initiative.
* Advocacy skills.
* Ability to support people with intimate and personal care needs.

Desirable Skills:

* Experience working with arts, crafts, cooking, and gardening.
* Ability to support people with positive behavior support plans.
* Ability to support people with physiotherapy and/or occupational therapy needs.

Key Competencies:

* Building positive relationships with service users.
* Carrying out intimate and personal care.
* Effective communication (verbal, written, and IT).
* Ability to work in a team and on own initiative.
* Advocacy skills.
