Senior Bookkeeper

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Bookkeeper to take ownership of day-to-day financial records for a portfolio of clients. This is a hands-on role requiring strong technical bookkeeping skills, excellent attention to detail, and confidence working across multiple systems and stakeholders.
This is not a junior or entry-level role. You will be trusted to run client books independently, ensure accuracy and compliance, and support month-end and year-end processes.
Key Responsibilities
Core Bookkeeping
* Maintain accurate books of account for multiple entities
* Process high-volume AP and AR transactions
* Bank, credit card, and loan reconciliations
* Post journals, accruals, prepayments, and corrections
* Maintain fixed asset and depreciation schedules
VAT & Compliance
* Prepare and reconcile Irish VAT returns (bi-monthly, quarterly, annual)
* Ensure correct VAT treatment across domestic, EU, and UK transactions
* Support audit and Revenue queries with clean, well-documented records
Month-End & Reporting
* Own month-end close tasks to agreed timelines
* Prepare management accounts support schedules
* Identify and resolve discrepancies proactively
* Liaise with accountants, CFOs, and auditors as required
Systems & Process
* Work confidently with cloud accounting systems (e.g. Xero, QuickBooks, Sage)
* Maintain strong document control and audit trails
* Contribute to process improvements and standardisation
* Support automation and system upgrades where applicable
Client & Team Interaction
* Act as a reliable point of contact for bookkeeping-related client queries
* Support junior team members through guidance and review (where applicable)
* Communicate clearly, professionally, and proactively
Required Experience & Skills
* Minimum 5+ years' experience in a senior bookkeeping or similar role
* Strong experience with Irish VAT and Irish accounting practices
* Proven ability to manage multiple entities and deadlines
* High attention to detail and accuracy
* Strong Excel skills and comfort working with financial data
* Confident using modern accounting software and digital tools
* Able to work independently with minimal supervision
Desirable (but not essential)
* Experience working in an outsourced or multi-client environment
* Exposure to management accounts or finance operations teams
* Prior experience reviewing or overseeing junior bookkeeping work
