Data Center Technician – Job Description Job SummaryThe Data Center Technician provides Tier I, front-line support for IT and network infrastructure within the data hall. You will support clients by ensuring systems, equipment, and associated data remain secure, available, and operational. Responsibilities include installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and ongoing operational support across servers, network equipment, cabling, and communication systems. You will represent BGIS values in all interactions with clients and team members.Key Duties & Responsibilities Installations & TroubleshootingParticipate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.Respond to scheduled and emergency callouts, including after-hours service and security escorts.Complete physical installation and power‑up (rack & stack) of servers, peripherals, and network equipment.Install, dress, and connect fibre and copper cabling.Replace hot‑swappable or modular components (e.g., drives, PSUs).Perform controlled system reboots, service restarts, and device configuration under direction.Carry out visual inspections and provide status reporting.Meet client deadlines by completing assigned and scheduled tasks on time.Follow site‑specific procedures, documentation, and detailed task instructions.Support wider operational projects and initiatives as required.Documentation & SafetyReceive, record, and store equipment shipments.Document work in ticketing systems, asset registers, and other recordkeeping tools.Conduct regular data hall walkthroughs; lift equipment; work from ladders; run cables; and use tools/test equipment as required.Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures.Provide security escort services for carriers, service providers, and maintenance contractors.Ensure service delivery meets SLAs, response expectations, and performance metrics.Knowledge & SkillsDegree in a computer‑related field preferred.Full driver's licence with access to own transport.Minimum 2 years' experience with IT/network systems in a data centre or equivalent technical environment.Understanding of data centre infrastructure: cabinets, containment, PDUs, servers, networks, cabling, and communication circuits.Familiarity with security/audit standards: ISO‑27001, PCI, SSAE16, SOC 1 & SOC 2.Strong customer service mindset with ability to respond with urgency.Excellent verbal and written communication skills.Ability to work effectively in a team environment that values collaboration.Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.High standards for quality, organisation, and cleanliness.Strong troubleshooting skills for infrastructure and systems issues.Basic understanding of network hardware and TCP/IP principles.Experience with Windows or UNIX/Linux server hardware.Proficiency in Microsoft Office; Visio or AutoCAD experience beneficial.Experience using ticketing systems (ServiceNow preferred).Experience in colocation or managed services environments beneficial.Relevant certifications (Cisco CCNA/CCNP, CompTIA A+) are advantageous.Physical Demands & Work EnvironmentAbility and willingness to travel regionally and internationally (travel reimbursed).Flexibility to cover shifts between 07:00 – 19:00 (Mon–Fri) and support occasional work outside normal hours.Participation in an on‑call rotation.Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 lbs (approx. 23 kg).Ability to work at heights and use ladders. #BGISUK
