Clinical Nurse Manager 2 - Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT)

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
Senior nursing role to facilitate the use of Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy in Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) safely and appropriately under the clinical governance of the TUH Infectious Diseases Service. Collaborates with Clinical Microbiology, Antimicrobial Pharmacists, Community home infusions services, and medical and surgical services. Manages and coordinates the operation, especially when the CNM3 is unavailable, ensuring the highest standard of quality care.
QUALIFICATIONS
Registered in the General Division of the active Register held by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland, or entitled to be so registered.
Minimum 5 years post‑registration experience, with at least 2 years in the specialty or a related area.
Clinical, managerial and administrative capacity to discharge the functions of the role.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Evidence of continuing learning and professional development.
Post‑graduate qualification of at least 7 on the NFQ Framework in the specialist area.
Knowledge of hospital patient management IT systems.
Evidence of management experience in an acute hospital setting.
Experience working in a specialist area.
GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY
Ensure high standards of care delivered safely in accordance with hospital policies.
Maintain patient‑centred focus through all hospital activities.
Identify suitable patients, support and educate patients and carers, liaise with stakeholders, and lead OPAT clinics.
Report to the CNM 3 Vascular Access Quality & Safety Team and the Infectious Diseases Consultant Lead for OPAT.
Build relations with key stakeholders across patient journey.
Commit to continuous professional development and public health agenda.
SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITY – Managing the Service (Quality & Safety of Service / Delivery of Results)
Serve as main contact and facilitator for OPAT within TUH and community services.
Provide expertise to patients and assist teams in patient identification, education and discharge.
Maintain a database of patients, monitor labs, and ensure timely escalation.
Conduct regular OPAT clinic reviews and act as TUH contact for community infusion services.
Develop KPIs and provide regular reports.
Communicate with multidisciplinary teams and assist in process improvements.
Model excellence, support nurses in access suitability, and promote the OPAT service.
Provide clinical assessments, advice, and telephone support to patients.
Act as first‑line contact for staff queries regarding care of OPAT patients.
Participate in audits, evaluate results, and use outcomes to improve service.

Act as change agent for staff, facilitating documentation development and professional relationships.

Leverage IT developments for patient care and administrative efficiency.
Collect and present departmental data as required.

Comply with Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005 and hospital health & safety protocols.
Promote hand hygiene and infection prevention as per hospital guidelines.
QUALITY, SAFETY AND RISK MANAGEMENT
Support delivery of the Quality, Safety and Risk Management Programme, managing risks and incidents.
CONFIDENTIALITY
Respect patient confidentiality, keep hospital documents secure, and return all property upon termination.
DATA MANAGEMENT
Ensure compliance with Data Protection Act 2018.
DEVELOPMENT OF HOSPITAL GROUPS
Expect potential changes in reporting relationships; full consultation will occur prior to any change.
NOTE
Adaptability is essential due to the evolving nature of health care delivery. The role supports the hospital’s Digital Transformation Strategy and is subject to ongoing review.
