Job Description
Join our DeviantArt team as a Senior DevOps Engineer and play a pivotal role in maintaining and architecting a robust infrastructure that powers one of the largest online art communities. You'll be at the forefront of ensuring our platform's high availability, performance, and security, handling over 1.5 billion monthly page views.
The DeviantArt DevOps Team is a small remote team responsible for all tasks typically handled by SRE/DevOps/Infrastructure Engineers, including networking, security, and database administration. We manage large-scale, mission-critical production systems on a public cloud. This role involves wearing multiple hats and offers both fun and challenges. Responsibilities include:
1. Architecting and maintaining a highly available infrastructure with focus on DDOS mitigation, autoscaling, self-healing, performance, and cost optimization.
2. Participating in a 24/7 on-call rotation to respond to outages or performance issues, with less urgent alerts during normal hours.
3. Maintaining and developing developer environments and CI/CD pipelines aligned with production for seamless testing and deployment.
4. Automating infrastructure provisioning using configuration management tools, with tests and documentation.
5. Optimizing and supporting sharded MySQL databases for reliable data handling as data grows.
6. Regularly updating system components to ensure security and technological relevance.

This is a fully remote position requiring asynchronous communication skills. Success in this role depends on flexibility, balancing server issues, development needs, security, and shifting priorities.
Qualifications
1. 5+ years managing large-scale systems as a DevOps, SRE, or Platform Engineer.
2. Strong analytical skills with experience in DDOS mitigation, troubleshooting, and resolving complex system bottlenecks, especially during high traffic or outages.
3. Excellent Linux command line skills, proficiency in Bash and Python for scripting and automation.
4. Deep knowledge of AWS, infrastructure as code with Terraform, GitOps, Docker, Helm, Kubernetes.
5. Experience with sharded MySQL database setup, administration, and maintenance with zero downtime.
6. Effective communication skills in English, capable of collaborating across teams and explaining technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
7. Ability to quickly learn systems, make decisions, work independently, and pay attention to detail.
