Context
We currently have an opportunity for an experienced Environmental Professional to join our growing team and lead Environment in Ireland. This position within our environmental team will suit a committed and ambitious Environmental Consultant who can demonstrate strong growth, leadership and interpersonal skills combined with commercial awareness and the ability to play their part in growing a dynamic high‑performance team.
The Principal Environment Consultant will have a focus on growth and business development of the environmental team within Ireland and the UK to raise SYSTRA’s Environmental profile. The incumbent will support other Product Lines in the UK and overseas. The post‑holder will be part of a growing Signature Team of multidisciplinary Environmental Professionals delivering projects for a diverse portfolio of UK clients. The Principal Environment Consultant will be the key contact for Environment in Ireland where we have experienced a steady increase in our workstream and there will be a clear objective to grow the workstream and team in Ireland. In addition, the candidate will support the Discipline Leads in the UK and will also be accountable for the delivery of allocated projects such as environmental impact assessments, consenting advice and will act as an interface between SYSTRA and clients.
Missions and Main Duties
Client engagement and work winning
Identifying and growing a sustainable pipeline of opportunities in the discipline focusing on the Ireland market
Identifying multi‑discipline opportunities to be followed in collaboration with other infrastructure/systems disciplines and in collaboration with the consultancy business
Client engagement to provide a deeper understanding of future needs and to position SYSTRA in the UK market
Participate in industry events to engage with new Clients and Partners
Maintaining an up‑to‑date understanding of market drivers, developments in discipline and key innovations in discipline
Development and recruitment of skills in line with the growth needs and the immediate pipeline of opportunities
Working in collaboration with Market Directors and PMO teams to identify resources required to deliver bids and projects. Delivery of project work to agreed programme, budget and safety and quality specifications
Line Management of Teams
While this may be limited as the team in Ireland grows there will be a future requirement to act as environment lead, demonstrating visible leadership of staff and fulfilling the following:
Management of the capability and experience of the team
Management of the health, safety and wellbeing of staff in the team
Responsible for the discipline strategy, recruitment, training and development of staff
Maintaining a competence framework for the discipline as part of a wider SYSTRA Ltd competence matrix
Undertaking and cascading objective setting and mid‑year development reviews
Cascading of business communications through the team
Safety leadership in the discipline, ensuring monthly cascades are attended, championing close call reporting, demonstrating openness and commitment to improve safety
Technical Leadership of discipline and assurance of production
Inspire technical excellence within the environmental team.
Ensuring that a blend of competent staff and independent contractors are available for the successful delivery of single and multi‑disciplinary projects.
Ensuring that technically sound solutions are produced, including all associated reporting and cost estimating, to programme and within budget
Ensuring that, where necessary, staff are experienced and qualified to undertake the level of environmental input required on any individual project
Leadership of technical safety within the function, including mastery of regulations such as CDM requirements, and industry best practice such as safe by design and health by design (prevention through engineering design).
Maintain strong working relationships, communication, knowledge sharing, innovation sharing with other SYSTRA entities.
Profile and Skills
Relevant environmental / planning degree or equivalent experience, Chartered
Demonstrable experience in EIA delivery
Relevant post‑graduate experience (ideally within a consultancy environment).
Comprehensive knowledge of the EIA process and environmental technical expertise.
Experience of leadership within multidisciplinary teams.
Familiarity with other consenting processes
Thorough knowledge of a diverse range of environmental issues
Proven track record of developing and up‑skilling internal teams
Evidence of successfully driving business growth
Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
Strong report writing, verbal and presentation skills and able to review the work of others to ensure quality.
