Clinical Nurse Manager 1 (PAC) - UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic

Overview of role:
The CNM1 Pre Assessment Clinic will be expected to take responsibility for a caseload of patients in which you will assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care.
In addition, you are expected to practice within the Code of Practice, Rules and Guidelines set out by NMBI and comply with Policies and Procedures of the UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic.
At all times you will practice within the limits of your experience.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
1.Undertake the assessment of care needs, and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care within the Pre-Assessment Clinic setting.
2.Carry out all relevant forms of care unsupervised.
3.AAct on behalf of patients and carers to ensure their views are respected.
4.Work in collaboration with members of the multi-disciplinary team.
Clinical Responsibilities:
Liaise with Patient Services staff to ensure that all patients awaiting an elective procedure are screened prior to surgery.
Inform Patient Services staff of any DNA's to clinic.
Participate in the pre-assessment of surgical patients and the subsequent planning and implementation and evaluation of their care.
Promote best practice in all aspects of care delivered to patients, relatives and their carers.
Respects individual's privacy, dignity, wishes and beliefs, minimising any unnecessary discomfort and encouraging full participation in the assessment of need.
Obtains informed consent for all nursing procedures to be carried out.
These may include taking of blood, recording of ECGs, measuring clinical observations and recording confidential information.
Interprets all of the information available and makes a justifiable assessment of patient's health and well-being.
Organise and perform venepuncture and indicated investigations in the clinic, interpret blood results, discuss findings with relevant medical and anaesthetic staff (as per Clinic protocols).
Liaise with GP's to ensure that any patients unfit for surgery are treated prior to surgery or referred to other specialities.

Participate in maintaining effective working relationships with other departments in SSC and external agencies.
Liaise with and support all members of the multidisciplinary team working in the department.
To ensure that equipment (both disposable and non-disposable) is maintained and stock managed to ensure economical use of all resources.
Management Responsibilities:
To support and supervise Staff Nurses and other support staff in carrying out their allocated clinical duties to the required standard.
To ensure that all staff practice nursing within the code set for the profession by NMBI.
To ensure that a professional standard of behaviour is maintained at all times.
At all times support the leadership of the Director of Nursing.
Education and Teaching Responsibilities:
To promote good relationships with other key members of the clinic staff through the exercising of attitudes which convey an understanding and awareness of the wider function of the clinic.
To adhere to Clinic policies in respect of grievance / disciplinary matters and health and safety.
To be aware of the need to keep abreast of clinical and professional developments by showing evidence of continuing professional development.
Deliver formal and informal teaching to nursing staff.
To act as mentor to junior staff ensuring that their learning objectives are met and that they receive adequate supervision at all times.
To participate as requested in the induction and guidance of new staff to the clinic.
To instruct and supervise junior nursing staff to enable them to attain their potential and assume responsibility for delegated duties.
Ensure all staff are trained and educated to rotate to all areas of PAC
To be alert to the learning needs of staff and to the many opportunities for teaching in order to promote continued education.
To attend and participate in in-service programmes when appropriate.
To keep up to date with current developments in nursing practice and education.
Administrative Responsibilities:
To report any faulty mechanical equipment to facilities.
To deal with incidents and accidents that occur in P.A.C. in accordance with the Clinic's policy and to accurately record and report detail.
To keep informed of all relevant policies including Health and Safety Policy to ensure maintenance of a safe working environment.
To consult with other nursing teams to ensure efficient and effective service.
To act as a full member of the Nursing Team in the clinical area.
To positively participate in Change Management and Development.
To attend meetings and sit on committees as required.
To use knowledge, judgement and experience to develop ways of coping with crisis situations i.e. patient and staff.
To observe and uphold daily cleaning standards in the department and to report any inadequacies to the Director of Nursing.
To promote, nurture and maintain a high level of staff morale hence promoting team spirit and job satisfaction among nursing,
To actively contribute to the process of clinical risk management.
Sports Medicine nursing responsibilities:
Support Sports Medicine Nurse.
Escalate any issues on her behalf to Nursing Management Perform Annual appraisals and communicate with Sports Medicine Physicians for input
Self-Development Responsibilities:
To maintain a personal record of professional development.
Act as a role model.
To keep an up-to-date record of on-going education.
To keep up to date with current developments in nursing practice and education.
To ensure that development is research based.
To ensure adherence to clinic policies and NMBI guidelines.
To maintain a level of excellence in patient care by maintaining standards and supporting the overall management of the Department.
Qualifications & Experience:
Be a Registered Nurse and eligible to register with NMBI on the General Division of the live register.
Experience:
Candidates must ideally:
Have managed patient care ensuring the highest professional standards using an evidence based and care planning approach.
Be computer literate.
Have excellent interpersonal skills and proven written and verbal communication abilities.
Have the ability to work on own initiative, prioritise and manage a number of issues simultaneously and demonstrate attention to detail.
Be able to identify potential difficulties and formulate solutions.
Be free from any defect or disease which would render him/her unsuitable to hold office and be in a state of health as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
