About the function:

Purpose of the role:

This role reports to the Group Microbiologist within the Science & Technology team, part of Diageo Global Technical. The microbiology team is recognized as the global centre of excellence in microbiology at Diageo.

The role involves delivering microbiology analysis and insights to improve manufacturing processes and support new ventures. It aims to enhance microbiology quality performance, aid in new product development, and solve technical problems across Diageo’s portfolio.

The role includes extensive laboratory work using classical and molecular microbiology techniques. It requires proactive interpretation of microbiology results, data analysis to generate insights, and forming action plans to assist production sites in root cause analysis, new product manufacturing, and improvements.

The position is based at the microbiology laboratory at St. James Gate Brewery, Dublin, with occasional travel and communication with global sites.

Key Accountabilities:

* Ensure health and safety compliance for consumers, customers, and employees, aligned with Diageo’s Code of Business Conduct.
* Proficient in classical and molecular microbiology techniques and result interpretation.
* Understand Diageo Microbiology standards and the Diageo Way of Brewing, providing technical recommendations for updates.
* Stay updated on microbiology developments and apply them proactively.
* Manage and deliver small projects to benefit the business.
* Drive solutions to completion with ownership and judgment.
* Lead problem-solving on production sites using technical knowledge.
* Build trusted relationships and influence stakeholders to implement scientific insights.
* Use scientific data to drive business changes, understanding associated benefits, risks, and obstacles.

Capabilities, Skills & Experience:

* Degree in Microbiology or equivalent at minimum.
* Practical knowledge of microbiology techniques: plating, PCR, QRT-PCR, DNA extraction.
* Experience in Brewing, Distilling, or Food Manufacturing, with knowledge of related science and technology.
* Understanding of hygiene standards, HACCP, preservative legislation, and water standards.
* Strong analytical, planning, and communication skills.
* Ability to influence and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
* Cultural awareness and understanding of customer and business needs.
* Good microbiology network inside and outside Diageo to develop the team as a global centre of excellence.
