Clinical Nurse Manager I Medical Oncology – Limerick Cancer Centre

Overview of Role
This role is to lead and manage the Medical Oncology nursing unit, ensuring high‑quality patient care and compliance with professional standards.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
* Coordinate and direct daily patient care operations when the CNM2 is absent.
* Analyse workloads and staffing needs to meet patient care requirements.
* Assess staff competencies and assign patient care duties accordingly.
* Delegate tasks in line with legal, professional and departmental guidelines.
* Communicate clearly with the Clinical Nurse Manager regarding unit needs and incidents.
* Practice nursing in accordance with the Nursing Board Code of Conduct and Clinical Guidelines.
* Adhere to HSE policies, protocols, and legislation.
* Maintain professional competence and pursue continuous professional development.
* Maintain high standards of professional behaviour and accountability.
* Respect patient privacy, dignity and confidentiality.
* Follow the lines of authority within the Nurse Management structure.
* Deliver nursing care to assigned patients using evidence‑based best practice.
* Promote patients' health, welfare and social wellbeing.
* Act as part of a multidisciplinary team in service delivery, case conferences and clinical meetings.
* Plan, implement and evaluate person‑centred care programmes.
* Build relationships with patients, families and the care team.
* Ensure care is empathetic and ethical, respecting dignity and spiritual needs.
* Recognise patients' social and cultural needs and link to community resources.
* Collaborate with external agencies to facilitate discharge and continuity of care.
* Provide education and advocacy for patients and families.
* Report and consult with senior nursing management on clinical issues.
* Maintain accurate written nursing records per local and national guidelines.
* Participate in innovation, research, evidence‑based practice and advancements in treatment.
* Engage in clinical audit, review and community needs assessment.
* Promote disease prevention initiatives in collaboration with the HSE.
* Delegate and supervise other grades of staff as required.
* Demonstrate flexibility and assist in other units as nursing resources demand.
* Refer clients to other services when necessary.
Clinical Governance
* Participate in clinical governance structures locally, regionally and nationally.
* Contribute to monitoring, audit and evaluation of the service.
* Record and report complaints in accordance with policy.
* Assist in the development of policies for medication safety and clinical products.
* Collaborate with health, safety and risk personnel on policy development.
* Report and act on matters detrimental to patient care.
* Practice quality, risk and health and safety principles.
* Support infection prevention and control guidelines.
* Adhere to organisational dress code.
* Coordinate unit management in the CNM's absence.
Accreditation
* Familiarise with policies, procedures and guidelines relevant to their clinical area.
* Assist in reviewing policies under department leadership.
Lean
* Lead, facilitate and participate in lean projects across the hospital.
* Support continuous improvement using lean tools.
* Attend on‑site training as required.
General
* Be prepared to work in other hospital areas as required.
* Produce documentation of training and experience as needed.

Qualifications & Experience
* Statutory registration and professional qualifications.
* Eligibility for registration in the General Division of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
* Continued annual registration and Patient Safety Assurance Certificate.
* Full health competency to perform duties.
* Good character.
* At least 3 years of oncology nursing experience.
* Depth of nursing experience in oncology; postgraduate or similar qualification is essential.

* Competent in CVAD device care.
* Competent in IV cannulation and venepuncture.
