About the Role
This position is based in a high-security prison for adult males, serving as the committal prison for those sent from the Special Criminal Court. The prison houses individuals linked to subversive crimes.

Psychology Service Overview
The Psychology Service at Portlaoise Prison offers evidence-based psychological approaches to men with complex clinical and criminogenic needs within the prison estate. Clients require psychological assessment and intervention based on the layered model of care provided by the Service.
Team and Collaboration
As part of a multidisciplinary team, Psychologists regularly communicate with Prison Governors, Officers, and other specialists such as Probation Officers, Doctors, Nurses, Psychiatrists, Teachers, and Resettlement Officers. This involves one-to-one contact, participation in meetings and case conferences, and contact with staff at IPS HQ in Longford. Psychologists also engage with community agencies involved in offender support and resettlement, including after-prison support services, addiction and counselling services, and the Health Service Executive, as well as with the families of those in custody.
Staff Grade Psychologist Responsibilities
* Manage a clinical caseload and contribute to the delivery of a professional Psychology Service tailored to client and IPS needs.
* Conduct psychological assessments and develop appropriate therapeutic interventions or management plans.
* Provide professional reports, e.g., supporting the Parole Board process.
* Collaborate effectively with team members and participate in inter-agency practice and service delivery.
Qualifications and Competencies
* Eligible for graduate membership of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) or the British Psychological Society (BPS).
* Hold a postgraduate professional qualification in Clinical Psychology recognized by PSI, or
* Hold a postgraduate professional qualification in Counselling Psychology recognized by PSI.
Applicants with qualifications obtained outside Ireland must obtain a statement of equivalence from the Department of Health.
Desirable but Not Essential
* Experience with emotional, mental health, and offence-related difficulties within a forensic population and group settings.
* Experience providing consultation, education, guidance, and support to multidisciplinary colleagues.
* Additional therapeutic or research qualifications.
