About Heart Children
Heart Children is the national organisation providing lifelong support for people born with congenital heart disease (CHD) and their families. CHD is the most common birth defect globally with an incidence of one in every 100 babies born worldwide. It arises when the structure of a baby's heart does not develop correctly during pregnancy.
Why it happens is yet unknown and there is no cure, only a series of fixes. The child born with CHD will often have to endure a lifetime of surgeries and other medical interventions which leaves more than physical scars.
For more than three decades, Heart Children has been at the heart of a community of over 20,000 people living with CHD across Ireland - offering vita emotional, practical, and advocacy support from childhood through adulthood. We receive no government funding and rely on support from member families, one-off grant funding and the generosity of the general public to generate our annual income.
