The Mater University Hospital is one of eight Cancer Centres in Ireland. Cancer is one of the largest causes of morbidity and mortality in Ireland (National Cancer Forum 2006).In 2021 there were over 25000 invasive cancers diagnosed in Ireland (National Cancer Registry Ireland, 2021).While the incidence of cancer is growing patients are surviving and living longer. Lung cancer ranks as the third most common cancer in Ireland, with approximately 2,700 patients diagnosed annually (NCRI, MMUH is designated cancer centre and has an established rapid access lung cancer diagnostics service. Since its establishment, the Mater University Rapid Access Clinic (RAC) has seen an approximate 300% increase in new referrals to the service. The Rapid Access Lung Cancer Diagnosis on average 100 lung cancers annually. The Nursing service provides support to the patient and their family during diagnostics and diagnosis.
