Clinical Nurse Manager – Day Ward – UMPD Sports Surgery Clinic, Dublin

Overview of role:
UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic is currently recruiting for the role of Clinical Nurse Manager on our Day Ward.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Working with the Theatre Manager, the CNM will lead by example ensuring that proactive, patient centred care is delivered to a consistently high standard, following policies & guidelines.
The CNM will be responsible for the efficiency of the Day Ward, leading and developing team members whilst monitoring quality standards.
The CNM will be required to possess a clear understanding and commitment to the ethos and philosophy of the SSC.

Management Responsibility:

Develop strategies and service goals for the Day Ward with the Theatre Manager and other CNM.
Provide good professional leadership and vision, facilitate team building and planned care.
Maintain a quality standard of service; lead a proactive quality improvement and support accreditation.
Develop a shared sense of commitment and participation among staff in change management in responding to the health needs of the patients.
Ensure all staff members are proficient in the management of patient care.
Audit current nursing practice and evaluate improvements in the quality of patient care including patient’s impression of the service.
Support staff development.
Plan duty rosters ensuring an adequate/even distribution of staff (skill mix/skill grade).

Communication:

Communicate with the Theatre Manager and other CNM on all matters in relation to the Day Ward.
Liaise with Nursing Administration regarding staffing levels.
Advocate and maintain open communication with SNM and the Multi‑disciplinary team on clinical and professional issues and ensure that prescribed care is delivered in accordance with agreed protocols.
Develop good working relationships to promote seamless care.
Liaise with members of the Multi‑disciplinary team as part of the contribution to promote improved patient management and liaise openly with other non‑clinical support staff and monitor the service provided.
Act as a patient advocate through communication, negotiation and representation of the patient’s values and decisions in collaboration with other professionals and community resource providers.
Promote a courteous and helpful attitude to colleagues, staff, relatives and visitors.
Know how to overcome any communication difficulties to ensure effective transfer of information.
Assist the Director of Nursing with investigations related to complaints – ensuring the SSC complaints procedure is followed.
Maintain good IT skills in order to receive and transfer electronic information effectively and promptly.

Clinical Responsibility:

Provide planned individuated holistic care for patients and ensure efficient planning/liaison with interdisciplinary teams.
Assess, plan, implement, evaluate and document the care of patients within the unit.
Demonstrate advanced specialist knowledge and provide clinical leadership in patient care.
Participate in the development, formulation and evaluation of guidelines, policies and procedures ensuring adherence to delivering a quality service.
Exercise high levels of judgment, discretion and decision making.
Protect patient confidentiality at all times.
Provide supervision/direction for team members who provide elements of care.
Comply with the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977.
Maintain a safe environment within the guidelines of safety and best practice laid down within the Infection Control Policy, Universal Guidelines, Data Protection Act 1988, Health Safety and Welfare at Work Act 1989 and be aware of potential hazards.
Take appropriate action, deal adequately with and report any untoward incident in the Department to the Theatre Manager/CNM and the Director of Nursing.
Maintain safe custody of controlled drugs according to Clinic policy.
Observe and uphold daily cleaning standards in the department. Report any inadequacies.
Maintain an accurate reporting system of near misses, occurrences, incidents, complaints, and coordinate risk management activities with other quality initiatives.
Keep up to date with current research, ensure evidence‑based practice and research is utilised, and must contribute to nursing research that is relevant to the area of practice.
Adhere to departmental patient identification policy at all times.
Provide a high standard of safe practice for patient care.
Ensure that all equipment in the Day Ward is checked by an appropriate user according to Clinic policy.
Demonstrate initiative and be receptive to new ideas and development.
Provide clinical expertise within the Day Ward.
Undertake clinical audit ensuring practice is evidence based – developing action plans as appropriate post‑audit.

Education and Staff Development Responsibility:

Educate all nursing and allied staff, including orientation of new staff to the speciality to develop excellent work practices.
Provide mentorship and educational programme for those within the speciality.
Ensure that all team members have undertaken mandatory training, reporting any non‑compliance to Nursing Administration.
Promote self‑care and wellness through patient education, health promotion and training, communication with relatives and significant others so that the patient will have an understanding of their condition thereby increasing compliance with treatment and advice.
Work with the Theatre Manager in ensuring all staff annual appraisals are carried out.
Be prepared to undertake further training to enhance knowledge and skills within the specialty.

Qualifications & Experience:

Be registered in the general division of the Register of Nurses maintained by NMBI.
Have at least five years post‑registration nursing experience (full‑time or equivalent hours part‑time) in an acute hospital setting with a minimum of three years recent nursing experience in a relevant area.
Hold a management qualification or be in pursuit of the same or willing to undertake one.
Previous management experience would be an advantage.
Possess well‑developed leadership, interpersonal and organisational skills.
Computer skills.
Orthopaedic experience.
