Offer description

Applications are invited for an appointment as Lecturer in German at the University of Galway. The appointment is tenable from September 1st, 2025.

About the Department

The German discipline at the University of Galway is vibrant, with a strong commitment to engaged teaching and research. We seek an excellent academic to enhance our research portfolio. The appointee will contribute to designing, teaching, and administering language and culture modules for the Bachelor of Arts, BA Global Languages, and related programmes, as well as postgraduate teaching, coordination, administration, and research supervision across the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures.

Research and Teaching Areas

Colleagues in German contribute to courses in language and cultural studies across various colleges within the university, including Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies, Business, Public Policy and Law, and Science and Engineering. Our research areas include innovative teaching methodologies, environmental humanities, GDR and post-GDR literature, memory and trauma studies, and colonial/post-colonial questions. The candidate must have a PhD in German and a strong research profile, ideally in environmental studies/eco-criticism (preferably 19th-century German literature), or in areas such as machine translation, translation technologies, localization (web/video games), applied linguistics, or sociolinguistics. Native or near-native proficiency in German and English is required.

Program Contributions

The School offers an MA in Translation Studies and an MA in International Contemporary Literatures and Media. The new appointee will, depending on their profile, advance one of these flagship programmes. The role supports the College's Internationalisation Strategy, fostering intercultural and interlinguistic competencies. The appointee will also engage in community partnership initiatives and contribute to the College’s Signature Research Area on Transnational Encounters and Global Legacies.
