Role Overview

This position’s responsibilities include the traditional clinical management of staff, alongside assigned projects, program advising for operational management and coordination, and administrative activities in support of the multi‑disciplinary workstreams within the emergency department. The post holder will be responsible for the provision of the highest standard of care to patients.
Key Responsibilities and Deliverables
Deliver patient‑focused service, ensuring the highest standard of service in terms of courtesy, kindness, efficiency and effectiveness.
Be responsible for the delivery of nursing care to all patients treated within the department.
Operate as the leader, collaborating with all service line stakeholders to ensure patients receive the most effective, efficient, safest, and highest value service across the continuum of care.
Work with the Assistant Director of Nursing, the nursing staff and the ED Consultant Group on the development of the nursing strategy and ensure its implementation in the Emergency department.
Provide leadership in the continual enhancement of nursing practices, service delivery and staff education relevant to the Emergency Department.
Support the strategic direction of Beacon Hospital through managerial leadership.
Communicate effectively with all staff and relevant stakeholders.
Design, develop, monitor and evaluate methods of quality assurance and clinical effectiveness in the emergency department.
Ensure the correct mix of nursing and allied staff are available to deliver services.
Ensure professional protocols reflecting the Code of Professional Conduct of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) are implemented and monitored regularly.
Investigate patients’ complaints and provide a timely response in accordance with the hospital protocol.
Plan, coordinate and implement service needs as assigned by the Assistant Director of Nursing and Director of Clinical Services.
Identify appropriate internal controls for the department and provide mechanisms to monitor and enforce compliance.
Organise and service inter and intra departmental meetings as appropriate.
Co‑ordinate patient service delivery with all relevant disciplines throughout the organisation.
Work collaboratively with other departments to ensure the efficient and effective use of resources.
Liaise with external healthcare organisations (e.g., VHI homecare) when/if required.
Work successfully with multidisciplinary teams, establishing a strong working relationship with the patient services team regarding the registration, administration, follow‑up and billing.
Assess and prioritise service workload based on organisational and departmental goals.
Delegate work assignments and set expectations, monitoring delegated activities.
Monitor the effective implementation of agreed Service Plans, including corrective programming where necessary for all staff grades within the ED.
Monitor fiscal budget to control operational and capital expenditures while adjusting staffing patterns to improve unit productivity.
Maintain a strong working relationship with the Assistant Director of Nursing and engage with relevant stakeholders on emergency department specific items.
Manage nursing and allied staff with responsibility for recruitment, appraisal, and development.
Provide professional leadership to encourage and guide team development.
Ensure all new staff receive appropriate induction training and competency monitoring.
Implement staff appraisal systems in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Nursing.
Contribute to a positive organisational culture among all staff.
Resolve disciplinary issues in accordance with established procedures.
Support the emergency department to proactively manage rosters, annual leave, levels of sickness and absenteeism, taking corrective action when necessary.
Participate in the development and implementation of service expansion and planning within the hospital as it affects the emergency department.
Manage multiple initiatives and adapt to different needs, constraints and barriers.
Assist in liaising with General Practitioners and other hospitals regarding access, quality and communication.
Ensure hospital and department protocols are implemented in establishing and monitoring standards of service provision.
Liaise with appropriate managers of clinical and non‑clinical support services to agree and audit quality standards, utilising key performance indicators.
Person Specification – Qualifications
Registered General Nurse; registration with NMBI.
Relevant post‑registration course specific to Emergency nursing.
Recognised management qualification.
Minimum 7 years of experience in acute Emergency care environment within the past 7‑10 years.
Minimum 5 years of experience at senior level.
Evidence of implementing change and practice development in emergency care.
