Post specific related information: The Midwifery Officer will be part of the Nursing and Midwifery Policy Unit within the Office of the Chief Nursing Officer in the Department of Health. The unit is built on a partnership model, with clinicians and civil servants working together to develop nursing and midwifery policies.
As part of the team, the main focus for the role is to assist in the ongoing policy development and design of midwifery workforce models of practice required to support the health service. The post holder will also have the opportunity to support policy development aligned to the overall 2025/2026 work programme for the unit.


Key Responsibilities

* Contributing to the implementation of the Strategy for the Office of the Chief Nursing Officer 2024-2026.
* Continuing the development of evidence-based national midwifery policy, in line with national policy, including Sláintecare reform.
* Supporting the development and design of innovative future models of midwifery practice required to assist the health service with a focus on the expansion of care through community nursing required to deliver Sláintecare objectives.
* Contributing as necessary to support and direct the achievement of the Office of the Chief Nursing Officer’s work programme and business objectives.
* Develop mechanisms and policy solutions to support midwifery career pathways through the development of the midwifery workforce at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
* Provide expert midwifery advice to the Principal Officer and CNO as required.
* Identify and engage with key stakeholders nationally across the health and social care services on programmes of work across midwifery policy areas.
* Work collaboratively on both a formal and ad hoc basis with relevant staff across the Department to contribute to the success of teams and projects tackling important midwifery issues as identified by the Department’s senior management.
* Support the Department’s work in reviewing and implementing the midwifery related elements of the Nurses & Midwives Act, 2011.
* Contribute as required to the day-to-day work of the Department, including contributing to the full range of parliamentary functions as required of the Department.
