Applications are invited for a 24-month full-time Research Support Officer: Experimental Officer position funded by UCC.
The position will provide essential technical and administrative support to the Mary Ward Microbeam Facility at the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at UCC.
The Facility was purpose-built in **** as a high-specification facility with cutting-edge equipment for surface characterisation, including a variable pressure SEM, FTIR microscope, Raman microscope and ultramicrotome.
The laboratory is a unique facility within UCC with diverse applications in materials science, bioscience, anatomy, pharmacology, food science, nanomaterials, microplastics, geoscience, art and heritage.
The successful candidate will assist with all aspects of laboratory management, including maintenance of key equipment, training and managing users, managing consumables, liaising with suppliers, conducting analyses for users where needed, method development, securing business internal to UCC and especially with users external to UCC, data management, laboratory risk assessments, laboratory waste management, record keeping and updating the laboratory website.

Responsibilities
To provide specific research skills to support the on-going development of the research team and to contribute to the transfer of knowledge in the specific research area.
To undertake research under the direction of a Principal Investigator.
To provide support in a specific area of expertise, including the use, maintenance and management of research, including equipment.
To perform a variety of technical duties supporting the research project or programme, as required.
To draw up detailed technical specifications as required.
To support research project activities.
To oversee installation of equipment, where required.
To assist PI's and researchers in performing lab work, where required.
To coordinate lab activity to support the research area/project where required.
To develop contacts to acquire knowledge and understanding of the research project and research related work.
To facilitate collaboration by liaising with other research groups within UCC and externally including industry projects.
To develop and maintain a good working relationship with service departments in UCC.
To co-coordinate day-to-day work to support the research project.
To liaise with the Principal Investigator(s) and colleagues on matters relating to the research.
To develop knowledge and understanding of the research project and research related work.
To ensure compliance with Health and Safety procedures.
To perform other duties related to the work described herein.
Specific Requirements
A graduate qualification in a field or discipline relevant to the area of investigation i.e. BSc, MSc or PhD or equivalent laboratory experience in geoscience / bioscience / chemistry
Proven experience of carrying out research in the relevant research speciality.
Demonstrable achievements in delivering results.
Ability to interact with stakeholders from a range of disciplines
Excellent attention to detail.
Excellent report writing and presentation skills.
Capability of working effectively within a team to achieve results.
Excellent organisational and communication skills.
High level of initiative.
Expert-level competency in micro-FTIR data collection and analysis
Expert-level competency in SEM data collection and analysis
Integration of analytical rigour into their work using the above approaches
Experience in laboratory management, including health and safety
Excellent data management and record keeping
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Excellent at solving problems
Excellent organisational skills
Excellent teamwork skills
Ability to work independently
Postdoctoral or equivalent laboratory experience in geoscience, bioscience or chemistry
Experience in developing analytical methodologies for diverse sample types
Ability to support the full life cycle of research projects, from funding applications to design of analytical processes to dissemination
