The Chinatown YMCA is seeking a Beacon Outreach Coordinator.Under the supervision of the Beacon Director, the Beacon Outreach Coordinator will play a critical role in the successful operation of the Chinatown YMCA M.S. 131 Beacon Program. They will be responsible for providing leadership, oversight, and support to outreach and community inclusion efforts. The Beacon Outreach Coordinator will have the skills and personality needed to forge relationships with youth who are chronically absent or have dropped out of school and persuade them to engage in Beacon programming and school.
Key Responsibilities:
Promote an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment that embraces the diversity of all staff and participants, and promote a positive program spirit.
Facilitate effective outreach to hard-to-reach youth and young adults who do not participate in after-school or community center programs.
Effectively forge relationships with youth who are chronically absent or have dropped out of school and persuade them to engage in Beacon programming and school.
Act as a “credible messenger”, maintain strong community connections, and address conflicts that have the potential to undermine community cohesion and trigger violent clashes.
Assist in the marketing and distribution of program information and recruitment in communities that might otherwise attend beacon programming.
Develop and maintain positive relationships with community stakeholders and parents/guardians through regular communication.
Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of participants by understanding, maintaining, and ensuring that staff and participants follow Risk Management and safety procedures.
Report all incidents in accordance with the Y policies and procedures.
Work with Counselors and the Beacon Director to plan and implement meaningful programming and special events.
Support the development and facilitation of required pre-program training sessions. Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings, and special events.
Adhere to all DOH, DOE, DYCD, YMCA of Greater New York, and funder standards, expectations, and regulations.
Desired Skills & Experience:
Minimum of two (2) years of education in a program area related to working with youth and/or communities.
Minimum of one (1) year of experience working with youth, family, and community development, including social and emotional learning, skill-building, youth leadership, neighborhood priorities, trauma-informed approaches, provision of services for individuals with disabilities, and cultural competence, including sensitivity to LGBTQ issues.
General knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Strong interpersonal skills, leadership qualities, and comfortable working with diverse youth and adults.
