Duties Description Diagnoses and performs major and minor mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repairs on self-propelled and non-self-propelled vehicles and equipment.
Maintains gasoline, alternative fuel, and diesel engines; performs preventive maintenance and safety inspections of vehicles and equipment. When licensed by the Department of Motor Vehicles, may perform NYS Motor Vehicle Inspections.
Maintains diesel powered equipment and components such as, hydraulic systems, transmissions and differentials, hydraulic and air brakes, automotive electronics, fuel injection systems, turbochargers and starting systems.
Orders, receives, and inventories supplies and parts for vehicle maintenance and repairs.
CDL B License is required. Candidates applying without a CDL B license are required to obtain a CDL B permit within 90days of appointment and must obtain a CDL B license by end of probation or will be terminated.
Minimum Qualifications 1. GENERAL PUBLIC AND/OR NY HELPS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems OR an associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.
Substitution: Education as detailed below may be substituted for a maximum of two years of experience.
Graduation from a technical or vocational program, such as, in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year of experience.
Graduation from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience
Possession and maintenance of a CDL Class B license issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles will be required. Candidates applying without a CDL B license are required to obtain a CDL permit within 30 days of appointment and obtain the license by the end of the probationary period. Failure to do so will result in termination.
Pursuant to the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act, pre-employment drug and alcohol testing will be required. Once appointed to/selected for the position, random drug and alcohol testing will be required.
