Marsh Tech is the IT organization that delivers solutions for the Marsh business as part of the broader MMC Tech team. Marsh Tech is seeking to appoint a Principal Engineer to lead development efforts around our strategic document management platform, called ‘MShare’.
MShare uses SharePoint Online as the underlying document repository, with significant and complex custom-built apps and integration components deployed in front of SharePoint to provide the specific capabilities required by the Marsh business, including straight-through integration from transactional systems, and AI / LLM powered natural language search. The first stage of the MShare program has been completed, and the product is now live in over 46 countries, for over 18,000 users, with around 35 integrating applications.
This is only the beginning. MShare has a multi-year roadmap including further deployments across Marsh, re-development of custom apps and integrations using MMC strategic technologies, multi-geo deployment across Microsoft’s Azure footprint, leveraging SharePoint features, and further use of AI / LLMs to enhance user experience.
The Principal Engineer will drive the technical direction and development of MShare over the coming years, leading a distributed technology team to deliver the roadmap and satisfy users. This is a great opportunity to shape this strategic technology for Marsh.
Responsibilities include:
* Leading distributed teams of engineers to build, improve, and maintain this critical application.
* Defining the technical strategy and roadmap, collaborating with IT and business stakeholders to design and implement solutions.
* Becoming a subject matter expert on these applications and the domain.
* Providing thought leadership on innovative technology deployment to gain competitive advantage.
* Hands-on leadership—coding, coaching, supporting team members, and demonstrating best practices.
* Promoting automation and quality, adopting DevOps practices, and fostering a shift-left mindset.
* Ensuring quality and standards in managing a business-critical platform with extensive deployment.
* Aligning with other MMC Tech groups and stakeholders to maintain consistency with company standards.
Requirements:
* Experience leading distributed teams on complex, globally-deployed, high-availability systems.
* Knowledge of modern application architectures and high-reuse development practices.
* Broad experience across technologies and business challenges.
* Familiarity with Agile, Scrum, Kanban, CI/CD.
* Ability to work effectively in a matrix organization with diverse teams.
* Experience as a Node.js developer, developing scalable APIs and applications, supporting project teams and collaborating with designers and front-end developers.
