Westmeath Employment Type: Permanent, Full-Time Department: Endoscopy Unit / Theatre Services Reports To: Endoscopy Clinical Nurse Manager / Director of Nursing About the Role The Endoscopy Nurse plays a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care within the Endoscopy Unit of our private hospital in Mullingar. The successful candidate will support diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, ensuring safe, efficient, and compassionate care throughout the patient journey. Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Care Provide nursing care to patients undergoing endoscopic procedures, including pre-assessment, admission, intra-procedure assistance, recovery, and discharge. Prepare procedure rooms, equipment, and instruments in accordance with hospital and infection-control standards. Assist the Endoscopist with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (e.g., upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, ERCP depending on services). Monitor patients clinical status before, during, and after procedures, responding promptly to any changes. Manage conscious sedation under hospital protocols and in accordance with national guidelines. Provide patient education regarding procedures, aftercare, and follow-up instructions. Safety, Quality & Compliance Maintain strict adherence to infection prevention and control policies, decontamination procedures, and endoscope reprocessing standards. Ensure accurate and timely completion of clinical documentation, reports, and electronic health records. Participate in audits, accreditation processes, and quality-improvement initiatives within the Endoscopy Unit. Ensure all equipment is checked, maintained, and operated safely, reporting faults promptly. Teamwork & Communication Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team including consultants, anaesthetists, HCAs, and administrative staff. Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients and families, maintaining dignity, privacy, and respect at all times. Support colleagues through mentorship, supervision, and sharing of clinical expertise. Professional Development Maintain professional registration (NMBI) and comply with continuing professional development requirements. Participate in mandatory training, Endoscopy-specific courses, and service-development initiatives. RequirementsEssential Registered General Nurse (RGN) with NMBI pin and eligibility to work in Ireland. Minimum 1 year post-registration experience, preferably in endoscopy, theatre, or acute care. Strong knowledge of infection-control, patient monitoring, and clinical safety protocols. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work flexibly in a fast-paced, patient-centred environment. Desirable Previous experience in an Endoscopy Unit (JAG-aligned environment an advantage). Certificate or training in conscious sedation, endoscope reprocessing, or GI nursing. Experience with electronic patient records and clinical documentation systems.
