We’re looking for a Principal Data Scientist to help shape the future of Microsoft 365 Copilot, focusing on Search, Chat, and Research experiences. This role is within the Microsoft Search, Assistant, and Intelligence (MSAI) organization, which powers the intelligence behind M365 Copilot by combining advances in generative AI with personalized search and recommendation systems. As a Principal Scientist, you will work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
Your expertise in large language models (LLMs), information retrieval, and machine learning will be key in enhancing the quality and scalability of M365 Copilot. You will partner with engineering and product teams to innovate, design, and evaluate AI solutions serving millions of enterprise users. This role influences technical strategy, shapes product direction, and collaborates across Microsoft to deliver AI-powered experiences that increase user productivity.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in Computer Science, Math, Physics, Statistics, or related areas is highly preferred. Candidates with a master’s degree, proven industry experience, or a strong publication record in Information Retrieval, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, and Deep Learning are also considered.
Extensive hands-on experience building and deploying products using Machine Learning, with expertise in Natural Language Processing, Large Language Models, Information Retrieval, and Recommendation Systems. Knowledge of Differential Privacy, Responsible AI, and related areas is desirable.
Proven ability to deploy machine learning applications at scale in production environments and a track record of shipping applied research to production.
Strong problem-solving, data analysis skills, and a good grasp of applied statistics, predictive analytics, statistical modeling, data mining, or machine learning algorithms at scale.
Leadership skills to influence others, including technical leadership, team development, and retention abilities.

Note: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check, is mandatory.
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or related fields.
Experience training large language models and post-training techniques like reinforcement learning.
Experience building agentic AI models using deep learning.
